well the way i see it is if you hear things often enough u begin to believe it, just like some kids get told by people when they are young that they will amount to nothing and in the end they do, i think listening to positive things all the time even when sleeping can help, what also helps is if you say positive things to yourself for example if something depresses u then start saying stuff to yourself that makes you happy u forget the depressing thing and think of the positive and putting yourself in situations that make you happy is always good.

It might help you have a more positive outlook on life, but I wouldn't recommend it as the only thing you do to treat your depression. When treating depression you have to be armed with more than mere positive affirmations. Someone telling you "be happy" will not snap you out of depression.
Do you know what is the source of your depression? Is it something in your life that has happened to trigger it? An event or situation. If that's the case you might also want to look into coping skills. It may also be the result of a chemical imbalance which medication can help treat. There's many causes of depression, helping figure out what is the source may help you find a treatment. The best thing to do is to seek professional help. Best of luck.

Lol, I feel like the odd man out here because everyone gave you all these different advices from psychology to faith. I like to take the different approach and combine the two. This is an actual proven technology that works! Go buy the book dianetics. You can usually find a kiosk in your local mall or just go to your book store. It's the all time best selling self help book. It's something you need to do with a partner, can be anyone your wife, neighbor, friend. If you don't have someone then find the book Self Analysis. Both these books are from L. Ron Hubbard. I have been on drugs in the past to get rid of depression, but they only cover up the source of the problem. I switched faiths from atheism to buddhism and finally found my answer in Scientology. I'm telling you Dianetics is 7 bucks to purchase and is well worth it! You find out that all your negative thoughts, unhappiness, etc. come from the reactive mind(unconscious mind) You run through your past to do whats called "Clearing" it. It makes you able to confront your past and come to a level of understanding you've never had before. If you have ever just sat down and thought about things, like depressing things, painful memories, it's your reactive mind flaring up. It's 7 dollars for the book, just give it a try. I'm not trying to make money from this, I just want to see people be happy.
P.S. Don't see a psychologist or psychiatrist, they are the reason why I got hooked on drugs in the first place, which created even more problems for me. Just remember the source of it is the reactive mind, it's not the real you! Get rid of that nasty reactive mind!
Just an added note from the guy below me there. It's not a cult believe me. And like I said you don't even have to go to a church, just hit up your book store and grab a book for 7 bucks. Although I don't dismiss meditation. I was a practicing buddhist before coming to scientology and meditation did help me to come to a better understanding of what present time is.

Over the last five years I had begun to have increasingly withdraw into a downward spiral of depression..
But now with the method I can fully focus my energy and thoughts into a decisive line on how to make my life better constantly. And it works like magic! I'm beginning to attract people to me once again and things have just been looking up since then.

More likely they are freeing you from your money! Take up a course in Tai Chi and/or yoga, and practice (absolutely free) the following meditation technique, for at least 20 mins./day, and preferably morning, afternoon & evening. Sit up straight in a comfortable chair in a quiet, darkened room, and gaze at a burning candle. Focus all your attention on the feeling your breath makes at the point where it enters and leaves your body, as you breathe regularly, preferably through the nose, in and out, in and out, in and out............... any stray thoughts noted and dismissed as being distractions, as you gently return your focus to the breathing method. Exercise vigorously for 30 - 60 mins. daily. Eat healthily. Keep occupied. See http://www.beattheblues.info/? & www.depression.com/- Visit your doctor, in case you are clinically depressed, and need medication and therapy. Write all this down & pass it on to others, asking that they do the same. Avoid Scientology and Dianetics like the plague: L. Ron Hubbard, its founder, used to write science fiction (I've read some - second rate!); then he started charging what he thought the traffic would bear, for his technique: it costs a packet to get to be a "Thetan" - no wonder governments all over the world wanted his cult banned, until they changed it to a religion, to escape it. Oh well, it's your money (but not for long, with that mob!).

Personally, I think that would make me slit my wrists for sure. Can you even imagine being depressed and having some really chipper person ordering you to "be happy!" over and over? God.
I do believe that getting out of your own head is good, and that a great way to do this is to focus your care and attention on someone else who is in need. Maybe you could try that. Start with somebody who doesn't require a lot of energy; maybe visit or take meals to an elderly person, listen to his/her stories, play cards, etc.

Yea, It can help, concentrate.
Another way to cheer yourself up is doing one thing which you really like --example--reading a book/ watching a film/ what you like.
Get into an activity/ hobby. It can take your mind off depressing thoughts without realising.
Sit calm with eyes closed, even 5 minutes & imagine the sea/ something calm.
Talk to someone you trust. Sometimes speaking it out, hearing yourself can relieve you.

I personally feel that those positive affirmations work. Except that the effect is temporary & you could'nt be listening to the CD 24 hours per day. The affirmations have to be powered up by faith. Each person have his/her kind of faith.
I'm a Christian. The most positive words of affirmation that I can find is in the Bible. The faith that power up those words is my faith in my saviour Jesus Christ. My faith comes from affirmation that Jesus has faith in me. Are you living in the US? I recommend buying some CDs from Dennis Burke's ministry. I'm a Singaporean. Dennis preached in my church before. He had blessed me with some words that made me see light in life.Go ahead & try it.
Don't deprive yourself of a chance to defeat your depression.

any sort of depression can be tide over by faith in GOD and sincere prayer.
Your prayer is from your heart. Further You must have to understood the fact that God is present in our heart. This can be realised in meditation. Further we are the creation of our own destiny. As per Hindu sacred religion, we carry all good and bad deeds life after life. There is no end unless we pray for unification of self with the divineliness.
Hence there is always a possible way to complete mergence with God in this life by a simple and wonderful meditation

It works if you choose to believe it (it is true ya know). I would, however, suggest that you read, invest yourself and time, into a book by Dr. Phil called Self Matters. He will help you rewrite the "script" of negative thoughts that you feed yourself and hear every day. Oh yeah, and talking to a cool person like me will help you as well (messenger or via e-mail).
take care...............................and remember, you are wroth the effort and work
