My cat will eventually die.. within the next 10 years for sure. And, would getting a cat of the exact same color and breed and giving it the same name be.. umm.. weird.. ?

Actually I think it's a great idea! It's a great way to keep the memory of your old cat alive. Also you will never accidentally call it the wrong name. I actually did the same thing, and now it seems as if my new cat has turned in to the old one in many ways (many cute things in common). Another option is to get a kitten while this cat is still alive, and this way some of it's qualities are bound to rub off on the new cat . Also a young cat can often add time to your older cats life from the extra exercise from having a kitten around.

I work at an animal shelter and we see this a lot. People will often come and adopt cats that look very similar to their recently deceased cat. Most don't name it the same thing though. I think it's a matter of not being able to let go yet. It's very common, however, to adopt a new pet immediately after the old pet dies, even on the same day. Everyone has different preferences. Some need time, others need to fill the void immediately. I wouldn't recommend getting the same kind of cat and naming it the same. It's going to be a completely different pet and won't have the same characteristis and personality as your old one, and you're bound to be disappointed.

I don't know if it's weird or not, that judgment lies with the individual, but if your thinking about this 10 years down the line, maybe you need a different cat now. I know you think it's a loving thing never forgetting your cat, thus naming every cat the same. But cat's are individuals same as you and I. Let them be that, no two are the same.

Getting the same color and breed is okay, if that's what you are partial to. But you should give the cat a different name. Every pet deserves to have his own individual name. That's all way down the road, though. Why are you already thinking about it?

It isn't weird. However, it is unhealthy. It would kind of defeat the mourning process and you would constantly be comparing the cats and they aren't going to be the same, no matter what. All animals have different personalities. In the mourning period there is a point where you have to overcome, doing this would inhibit this process and make it harder on you in the long run. Identical is okay, but try for a different name, or even if you want him to have the same full name, call him somthing different for short.

I personally wouldn't do that; it does sound kinda weird in a way, sorry.

I'm sure you already know that you will never be able to replace your beloved cat, don't you?

Getting the same breed & color is one thing but giving it the exact same name is quite another!

Besides, he probably won't have the same personality & temperament.

Think about it!

If you ever lost a child and were lucky enough to have a second one, would you name him or her the same?

I think not!

I know I wouldn't!

Lots of hugs & cuddles to you and your cat!

Take care my fellow cat lover! xxx

I guess it wouldn't be weird but it sounds like you are not going to be able to let your cat go when he/she dies. Live for today and cherish every moment you have with your cat in the present. YOU HAVE 10 more years at least. Don't focus all your energy on "weird" things like this.

the only problem with this is the cat probably won't act the same way and you will be expecting it to behave the same way do the same things the same way, and most likely won't which maybe hard on you and you may get upset with the cat so it really wouldn't be fair to you or the new cat. let your cat keep it's own identity and let the new cat have it's own identity.

You know, we thought about doing that after our last cat died. We decided that same day that we wanted to get another, and preferably get two kittens. We wanted to get one that looked just like Martha, and we were going to call it MJ (Martha Junior).

We looked and looked but just couldn't find one that appealed to us.

We ended up getting two completely different cats, neither of which we named Martha.

So I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying don't limit yourself and close your heart to a little cutie just because it doesn't match the cat you had.

No. It shows you love the cat so much. Just bear in mind. Different cat will give you different satisfaction. Try other breed as well.
