go to www.kraftfoods.com and search for kids. they have a whole section on birthday parties and ideas for food/snacks/fun/recipes. There are tons of quick and easy ideas to base a whole party around. I've found it very useful for me and my daughter. I use their kids section for all sorts of ideas to have fun in the kitchen!!!
Hope that helps!

At my son's first birthday I made separate food for the kids and the grown ups.

For the kids we had vegie sticks (I par-cooked the harder ones) with hommus to dip them in, chevup sausages (they're excellent - no skin to get caught in little throats and if you go to the butcher they'll be excellent quality), baby ham and cheese muffins and a fruit platter.

I wanted a cake with very little sugar and no eggs (my son reacted to eggs a few months ago and I haven't been game to try again yet!) so I found an egg and lactose free recipe which had quite a bit of water in the ingredients. To make it taste better I made orange water (by boiling up some orange peel) and substituted that for the plain water. All the kids loved the cake (so did the grown ups!) and I felt better knowing they weren't eating really sugary stuff.

My advice is to not go too overboard with food and plans... One year old birthday parties are so overwhelming for the child... try to keep it simple... At my daughters 1st party... In addition to cake and ice cream I just served:

Veggie tray with dip
Fruit tray
Homemade spinach dip
Bowl of pretzels
Platter of sandwich cookies (like those ones called "duplex" cookies, they are like a generic oreo? :) kids love those for some reason...)

I had soda for the grown ups and juices or milk for the kids... That was it!

I also just put everything out on the table along with paper plates, napkins, cups and plastic cutlery.... and let everyone serve themselves throughout the party... kept everyone occupied and happy... :)

Best of luck!

I think the best treats and snacks you can provide are finger size foods that are not choking hazards. Cutting pieces of fruit (like strawberries, peaches, bananas, etc.) with some type of fruit dips would be an excellent choice for your little ones. Avoid choking hazards like peanut butter, hot dogs, grapes, ets. For a main meal some happy face pasta with meat sauce and steamed vegitables would be yummy and nutritious.

My mom made these little sandwiches for my every birthday, and still for me today on non special occasions (lol)
get a loaf of bread from bakery, but have them cut it lengthways. (as a child, mom would have the bakery add some coloured dye to the bread: pink and green )
take a long slice of bread and roll it thin with a rolling pin, cut off crusts.
spread a thin layer of cream cheese. then add a row of cherries. roll the bread up into a log like shape. then cut the 'log' into little slices. Each mini sandwitch will be round, with a spiral of cream cheese and a peice of cherry in the middle.
Also additional mini sandwiches are : cream cheese with gerchin pickles or olives. Also peanut butter with banana. My kids all love these.
cheesies, flavoured crackers, mini fish shaped crackers, small slices of brick cheese, animal crackers, cereal bars cut into bite sized peices, rice krispie squares, sliced meat. My 2 yr old likes small slices of pepperoni or like a polish sausage koil.
Any fruits, grilled cheese or other sandwiches cut into shapes with a cookie cutter. Pancakes , mini pogos on a stick, mini hotdogs, but make sure they are cut length ways for the small ones, nuts and bolts type mix, removing the pretzels if necessary, soft bread pretzels, mini muffins, mini donuts like timbits, mini cupcakes, fish sticks and french fries, chicken nuggets, pickles, olives, mini canned corns (whole), small peices of crab imitation meat, mini egg rolls.
good luck
