Before you go thinking that a no-kill shelter is such a wonderful thing, please rent the DVD "Shelter Dogs" (Netflix has it). All no-kill shelters do kill animals that become sick or mentally unbalanced to the point where there's no hope they'll be adopted. And all animals who stay in typical shelters long enough become sick or mentally unbalanced, because it's a horrible, horrible way to live. The chances of your animal being adopted depend greatly on its age, its breed, its tempermant, and its ability to keep it together in the shelter so that somebody thinks it's a cute dog/cat/whatever. Talk to your local humane society and see if you can get their opinion on whether or not your pet has a good chance of being adopted. If the answer is no, I would seriously think twice about looking for a place that will allow him to go slowly, agonizingly insane before they put him down.

Um WELL...Sadly every animal shelter in AMERICA is over crowded! There are too many unwanted pets in this world and WAY to many breeding farms and so on and so forth...eventually there is just no hope for one animal or another and the unthinkable has to be done...A no kill shelter is just that, but after an animal has been there for say six months or so they are often sent to the pound for another 30 days before um well you know...anyway there are also vicious animals that should not be pets EVER...and yes I have even seen vicious cats...sadly after evaluation these animals are sent away for um well you know...we try to help all we can but there is only so much one place can do...have your pets spayed or neutered! Having a pet is like having a child only this one is disabled and will never leave home until the day it dies...are you ready to make that commitment?

No kill shelters are more inhumane than kill shelters.
They cull when there are vet expenses to deal with.
They eventually have someone else do the euthanizing when an animal becomes too old, sick with heart worms etc, or cage crazy.

Technically no. They are correct to say they are a no kill shelter since they don't kill the dogs and cats themselves.

In a no kill shelter an animal can live out the rest of their lives there. They are not put to sleep.
