"Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication.

In modern times, this process almost always involves the sending of electromagnetic waves by electronic transmitters but in earlier years it may have involved the use of smoke signals, drums or semaphore. Today, telecommunication is widespread and devices that assist the process, such as the television, radio and telephone, are common in many parts of the world.

There is also a vast array of networks that connect these devices, including computer networks, public telephone networks, radio networks and television networks. Computer communication across the Internet, such as e-mail and instant messaging, is just one of many examples "

You are lucky because I'm currently studying telecommunication engineering. Well, this is the definition that I've got from wikipedia. "Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over a distance for the purpose of communication."
Some good examples of telecommunication are telephone, internet, mobile phone, GSM, 3G, WiMax, WiFi, walkie talkie TV, radio etc. These are the tools or instruments that we have in our daily life to communicate with other people from different place.
Telecommunication is an important element closely related to our daily life and I can say we can't live without it.

For a formal or better explanation on telecommunication. go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunication.
I hope you find these useful.
