Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Scion is making a nitch in the market, for mini cars: Mini cooper (but they can get pricy), Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris....
Go to edmunds.com and put in your price range and they will list cars with good ratings.

Scion is my 1st pick (customizable/reliable/economical). Mustangs don't have much for cooler stuff inside. Minis take forever to get (plus you really need to get a Cooper S, which is more). I think Dodge Chargers start around there...
