I am going to Hawaii in a couple of months and wondered which place would be less expensive ? I know all the Islands have high prices but any ideas on a place that may be less of a "tourist trap "?

I liked Kauai the best. It isn't touristy at all. If anything you get a truer outlook of what Hawaii is all about. You won't find a lot of huge, tall hotels and crowded beaches. You will find however, cheaper prices with a ton of activities along with the most beautiful thing in Hawaii, The Napali Coastline.

The other nice thing was that when we go on vacation my wife and I like to enjoy different paces, and Kauai allowed us to enjoy both. I like the active activities while she just wants to lay around on the beach.

Check out http://www.gohawaii.com/kauai/ for more info.

Also on Kauai the Princeville and Poipu areas are nicest.

There are a lot of deals to be had in Hawaii.

If you search for Hawaii Hostels, I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding places to stay for about $25 per night. I know of about six in Waikiki.

There are all sorts of fun and cheap things to do on all the islands but Oahu easily has the best public transportation system.

I think bus fare is about $1.50. You can hop on a bus and go on a self guided circle-island tour. The bus stops at all the best stops along the way. You can stay as long as you like and then use a transfer to keep going on to the next stop.

I would suggest Oahu for the cheapest Hawaii vacation simply because of the many hostles on the island, great public transportation and the largest variety of activities.

How about the Big Island or Maui? On both islands, you could stay at a Bed & Breakfast. Workers/Owners of these places usually know about the "best place to get a meal", "flea markets to go to for souveneirs", etc.

You could also go online to look for tours that might interest you, like on the Big Island, a trip to the Volcano, a circle island tour...on Maui, you could go snorkeling, kayaking -

Each island is unique, there will always be tourist traps, go with what might interest you most?
O'ahu - hustle and bustle, Pipeline, Sunset Beach, has the only Royal Palace in the US, Waikiki, Honolulu City lights, Bishop Museum

Kauai "The Garden Isle" - the wettest spot in the world, canyons, lush green rain forests, black sand beaches

Molokai "The Friendly Isle" - old Hawaii, rural, small population, laid back, country, mule/horse back riding, peace, serenity,

Hope this helps

Hilo, Hawaii on the Big Island. Of course all through Hawaii the cost of living is quite high, yet Hilo has managed to keep prices low. Stay at the Naniloa Hotel or Seaside for reasonable rates.

i think the best hawaii is in the Big Island. stars at 4200meter high mountain Mauna Kea with 13 world largest telescopes, Volcano Lava at Kilauea, and Whale watching.
you cant miss these..
Its an experience. what you can do on the other islands can be done at Big Island except shopping.
what an experience to see a moon bow if you are lucky on a full moon night...and a double rainbow. its amazing.

The tourist traps are where the big hotels are.
Where the big waves are.
It is cheaper not to take the island hoppers to other islands.
Pick one place that you can fly into and rent a car and drive around and see everything on that island.

In Maui, stay at the Outrigger Aina Nalu in Lahaina....no frills and close to the action. All the rooms have refrigerators and you are close to supermarkets. So, of you're on a budget you can buy food at the store and eat in the room. Maui is a neat island because half of it is dry and half is wet. It's very peaceful unlike Oahu which is congested and very touristy.
