This is a sign of cirrhosis of the liver. Alcoholics skin literally gets thin as paper and the slightest bump or bruise gets nasty like that. Look at her eyes. Are they yellow. When they get yellow she will need a doctor right away. The billirubin builds up toxin in their bodies and causes the yellow jaundice which also causes the skin to tear easily. The real danger here is death from internal bleeding from esophageal varices. This is a serious disease and I feel for your friend because of her moms alcoholism and for the result of it. I know because I watched my boyfriend drink himself to death and he bled to death internally. It was a hard thing to watch.

Excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause anemia as well as problems with blood clotting. Even a light touch can cause a bruise or break the skin and result in excessive bleeding, if her blood's not clotting properly. Additionally, her white blood cell count can be affected, causing her to not fight infection properly, so little bumps and bruises don't heal the way they should.

I'm sorry for your friend, and sorry that you have to deal with this as well.

What can happen is that alcoholism damages your liver. Your liver makes the clotting agents in your blood and this can be the reason why you can have bleeding. In other words the liver may not be able to make any more clotting agents.

How do you know she is bleeding for no reason--she may bump them and you don't know it. is she obese??? Split skin happens when it can no longer stretch the way it should. Blood sugar can also cause open wounds--they don't heal and results are gangreine and amputation.

Your liver controls your bodies ability to clot. Alcohol effects your liver. She needs to see her doctor and get labs done.

I'm not sure, but it is not a good thing. Has this just started? Or has this mom been to the dr. about it yet? If it's new, please call the dr or medics to be checked out asap. Take care.
