Having a hearing problem nowadays is not the bad thing it used to be 20 years ago. First of all, there are excellent hearing aids for all kinds of hearing impairments in all shapes that can hardly even be seen. Also there are very good specialists out there who can help your child tremendously. The most important thing to do for a child with hearing impairment is to provide hearing aids (if they are going to help in his case) so he can learn to speak correctly and communicate without problems. If you have done that on time (which I suppose you did), then you don't need to worry - your child has excellent chances to lead a perfectly normal life like everyboday else. If you are a little late and his speech is impaired, go to a speech therapist immeadiately so your child will not lose self-esteem by not being able to go to a normal school and communicates with other children. If the hearing impairment can't be completely restored with a hearing aid, you should involve your child in a class or find a specialis who can teach him some alternative methods of communication like reading lips and sign language. Whatever the problem, do not ever think your child is inferior to other children and never say a condescending word to your son about that. After all, we all have a little something we have to live with and that doesn't make us less normal or worthy than others.

My daughter Sara has hearing problems and wears hearing aids. We really don't do any thing any differently for her than we do for the other kids.

She sees her doctor and he makes adjustments at school they put her close to the teacher and next to quieter kids.

I don't know what exactly you want help with, Maybe you could add a little more detail.

Sara didn't like to wear her aids at first I had a heck of a time with her she use to throw them away and she would get a headache from them. but once she got use to them there was no more problem. She got hers when she was like 2 yrs old.

I don't know if I helped you but I hope so. If he is having problems with his speech you could contact the Intermediate School District in your area to get him extra help in learning to speak or to learn some sign language.

They will have a lot of helpful information for you also. If he is having problems hearing even with aids maybe you should look into an implant. Talk to your doctor I am sure he can give you all the information you might need.

Just remember the bigger deal you make of it, the bigger deal the kid will make of it.

Well, I know the feeling of using hearing aids becuase at my age 20, I still use them, freshman college. I began to use hearing aids at age 7 too, had a bad hearing mostly around 5 percent of hearing. Now, I can hear 75 percent better. I would not freak out if your child is using hearing aids. As long as he keeps using them, the better in the future his hearing will gain a higher lever of hearing with the care and love you can give to your child. Just believe in yourself and in faith for your child. Trust me. Someday your child will be able to use temporary hearing-aids like I now do...I didn't even need to learn sign language cause my mother had faith in me. Don't worry. Just believe that your son will hear better in the near future. He may hate using the hearing aids...I still do...but you what..I learned that I'm unique and the disabillity doesn't bother me. Don't let it bother you nor your son. Tell him to believe in himself and convince him to use the hearing aids every single day!!! so that someday his hearing level will increase and will only need to use it temporary 10 years later.
ps.....teach him how to read lips...trust me...it will help near the future...cause i still read lips whenever i'm having a conversation with a person....in case if i missed a word...
I would suggest to put subtitles on all tv, movies or news media...so that way he can read lip signs..it helps..

I'm confused as to what your question is then? If he is already using a hearing aid... What is the problem? He sees a regular doctor about this, right? I don't think there is anything you can do to reverse his hearing problem that the doctor hasn't told you about already? What specifically are you looking for with your question?

Is his hearing getting worse? If so, you may want to start taking sign lauguage classes. If not, is the problem about him getting picked on in school? Can you clarrify you question a bit if possible?

Well....you should talk to him about this and tell him that he's perfectly normal and he shouldn't be shy or something. I'm very sorry about this and I hope I helped you. Good Luck!
