Can't say that its common, but you ought not to worry too much about it. in this case at least its serendipidity.
If you do you want to get onto the other side though, would suggest that you do something about it, chat a girl up, ask her out, set the mood, etc.

Are you my double?? I am in the exact situation as you. I am going into pro-school fall term, 21 years old, over 6', not fat or unattractive, no girlfriend or any semblance of having a 'relationship' with a girl.
I don't know about people like us. I suppose that I am just a chickenshit, so I never talked to any girls. Right now I am just trying to get my me degree, so it's not my top priority. Prehaps you will have success if you start talking to girls at social events, I don't know. My school has 19,000 people and I believe there might only be a few. A way to get a rough idea is to use the statistics for virgins (which I assume you are). A number I am seeing from a quick search is around 90% of college having had sex. Of course this number is probably referring to college seniors to be as high as possible, which would be in the 22-23 category. It can also be different depending on if it's a party school or not or if they are including graduate students. I'd guess that 5 percent of those virgins have never had a girlfriend. So, maybe 50 in 10,000 as colleges go. Prehaps higher for a world population if you include the nuns, priests (...), tibetan monks, etc. Sorry I can't be of any more help as I am in the same situation.
Good luck, my friend.

I have never kissed/held hands with a boy (I am 21 years old), no boyfriend ever. Why?
I am 21 years old, not fat or unattractive over five foot female and never had a boyfriend, never held hands, kissed or anything that even a normal 8th grader has experienced.
LOL I know EXACTLY what you're feeling!
i'm a girl (the id belongs to my brother though)

for starters, why does your appearance have anything to do with it? 15% of college students haven't had sex....that's the only statistic I know.....the only one. Anyway, first piece of business is for you to just relax. I highly recommend flirtation. Your problem is that you probably aren't recognizing the signs that are being sent your way. I bet you miss the first signal. The signal that says, "I'm interested, approach me." It might be a woman giving you sultry eyes with a sly smile from across the room or even striking up a conversation with you. After receiving the signal you should comment on her. If you know her you can say something like, "So, are you feeling better? I heard that you were sick." (something personal) If you don't know her you can strike up a conversation. Let's say that you dig a chick from class. "Hey, did you get what he/she (instructor) was talking about in class?" After you build a familiarity with her, start flirting. If she is responding positively she'll tilt her head or touch you when talking (I don't know why, we just do. We don't have a manual....I wish we did.) Anyway, just relax. Don't get too caught up in all of the hype about it. If you're all frazzled by thoughts of failure you will fail. Just be confident and sweet. Women respond to men who are confident, sweet, and have a sense of humor. Good luck.

I think that you are just waiting for the right girl. Don't worry! You sound almost like me. Same age. Never had a boyfriend in my life. I asked my mother a lot of times what is wrong with me and am I an alien or what? Hope you find the right girl soon. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

It's pretty uncommon, but it's no big deal.
When you find a girl that you like ( and who seems to like you too) just ask her out. All the rest comes naturally.
The world is full of women, but that doesn't mean that you're suited to all of them - someone special is worth waiting for, and I'm sure you'll find her someday.
You sound like a nice guy, so just have patience. ....
