1) Relaxation.
2) A little bit of exercise and my blood and heart pumping.
3) A better knowledge of my body and what I like.
4) A better understanding of my sexuality and being more in-tune and in-touch with my fantasies and sexual drive.
5) A check-up to make sure everything's functioning down there.
But mostly, it's about the short-term pleasure!

Honest answer:
When a man takes his time and enjoys the "journey" instead of just being in a hurry to ejaculate, he can build up control, such that he can choose when he wants to enjoy his orgasm, which is very beneficial when having sex with a woman, as you won't be prone to premature ejaculation.
The trick is getting in tune with your body's response and recognizing the sensations that precede ejaculation, then "backing off" and allowing your system to relax a bit before resuming your pleasure.
Masturbation is also a good sleep aid; it relaxes the body, releases endorphins and relieves stress.
