To some degree that is true.
The way I think of going to heaven is that it is a result of having lived a life dedicated to Jesus (which begins at the point of acceptance of His Lordship).
I think our focus is what does He want us to do here in the natural until such time as all of creation is redeemed from the prince of this world.
I am serving God today in order to serve Him and be with Him for all eternity. (Is that so bad?) The way I see it the new creation will be a place where the most amazing things are going to happen, we will work successfully, our every move and work of our hands will be a joyfull celebration and praise of God, without any hindrances. I just imagine us creating and doing beautiful things in concert with Almighty God.
And it won't be about me, it is about the wonderful joy of being reconciled with the One who has truly loved us all.

No people don't serve God to go to Heaven. They serve God because they believe in their hearts that it is the right thing to do.

No matter how much someone knows about the Bible or God and trust me, I do know a lot. (Trained to be an altar boy, went to a Christian middle school and High school) I still sin, just as much as the next man.

To serve yourself is vainity and vainity is a sin. And you don't go to Heaven by just serving God. In the Christian faith, you have to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and live by the rules set forth in the Bible in order to be born again and allowed into Heaven. Also according to the Bible, not all the righteous will go to Heaven. Some will stay on earth which will become whats called Paradise in the Bible.

Perhaps, if you are thinking heaven is a big pot of gold somewhere over the rainbow, or a big juicy pie in the sky.

If Heaven is just a reward to encourage you to do something good.

If Hell is just a punishment to prevent you from doing something bad.

Would there be something in serving God if there was no Heaven and you went straight to Hell anyway?

God is ether right or he isn't, and of course he is because that is the definition of God.

Yes. The Lord will see all those who are trying to buy a ticket into Heaven, and He will reward the truly selfless.

Serve and love the Lord and each other, think not of personal gain. Heaven will be that much happier for those that truly deserve it.

That's a superficial analysis. No one really knows what the afterlife is like, and since we can't visualize it, it's really hard to be serving yourself in this way.

Right now, the only thing we have is our relationship, and that's the core of most Christian's aspirations.

A sufi once said that (and I paraphrase) " If I worship God out of hope for reward or fear of punishment, then send me to hell." Surely if we indeed are created by a higher being then we must have some purpose other that self preservation.

ya thats why Christians mus be careful when we serve God. we serve God not to get to heaven, but becos we love and adore Him, and that we think it is only right that we serve Someone who saved us.

but i know some religions serve "God" to go to heaven. like Islam and some sectors of buddhism/taoism.

Nope - because the underlying movement of creation is that God WANTS you to be in heaven, so by doing things that fulfill that, you are doing God's will. That it is also your will is a happy coincidence
