No. Southwest has only experimented with seat selection on a test basis and the results so far haven't been encouraging to those who desire that particular aisle or window seat. The hang-up is Southwest Airlines desire to turn around a Boeing 737 in fifteen minutes, and the quick boarding simplicity of the unassigned seat has worked for them since the 1970's. As long as the traveling public will put up with the "thundering herd" loading process and continue to keep Southwest in the top tier of favorite airlines it's unlikely to change.

southwest airlines doesn't have reserved seats on most flights (they did a test run on them awhile back out of a couple of airports...i'm not sure if that's still going on).

get to the gate and sit in your spot in line early for the best seat (if the location matters that much to you). otherwise, scope out the surroundings and find a person you'd want to sit next to and get in line behind her/him.

Nope.

Southwest Airlines treats people like cattle. You have to line up and wait for your seat, at some airports the line starts two hours or more in advance. Then there's a mad rush for seats. If you travel with someone and want to sit near them, you'd better get to the airport early and stand in line.

No... Their boarding policy is that you get a letter (A,B, or C) when you check in, based on how far in advance you check in and then you board in order of which letter you have. So if you check in early then you get a better chance of being able to board sooner, but they don't offer any advance seating assignmnets. This is just one reason why Southwest sucks.
