ALL contracts are for EIGHT years.

what jobs you rate are based on your ASVAB score. some of them require longer Active Duty Commitements than others.

I served in the CG for 10 years. If I had to do it all over again, I would have specialized in port security because that is where the center of action will be. The CG also does aids to navigation details, search and rescue by sea and air, and military training since during wartime the CG serves under the Dept. of the Navy, as does the Marines. There are many jobs available, it's according to what your skills and experience lies. You can do anything from basic seamanship duties, to supply, being a clerk, a radioman, a medical corpsman, and many more, too many to list. Go on line and search for US Coast Guard websites. I'm sure they have plenty of answers for your questions. I did read that the military has done away with blanket enlistment years of active duty. I don't know if it's effective now, but again, ask the recruiter if the website isn't too clear on your questions. I would highly recommend the CG as a service because they will keep you busy in peacetime, and you can also serve in a military capacity if you choose a certain rate (job) that is associated with whatever is necessary overseas.
