I was raised in a family that has always used the expression "Oh my goodness!" It wasn't until I entered school that even heard the expressions "Oh my God" and "Oh Jesus" or "Oh Christ" or "Oh Jesus Christ". To this day my family still uses the expression "oh my goodness". Perhaps it is because my family is religiously diverse (not just my immediate family, but extended family as well) or perhaps it is just a phrase that has been passed on generation after generation. It doesn't make much sense (if you think about it), but it it is an exclamation. I wouldn't have a problem saying "Oh my Ganesh!"...but it'd feel weird just like saying "Oh Jesus", etc, feels weird to me because my family and I have never used the expression. It'd seemed forced if I did use it since it is just more natural for me to use the phrase "oh my goodness". Now when I'm happy or thankful, etc, I have used to expression "Jai Ganesh!" many times just as I have used "Thank God!". I never have said "Thank Jesus", but I do have some Christian friends who have when they were overjoyed, too.

Media uses this phrase enough it has become a part of normal expletives like "by Jove", "by Thor's banjo" or "fudgesythes". I do not believe that intentionally blaming any Deity is the correct solution for anything that irritates.

its a cliche, to me saying OMG! means nothing really, just an exclamation when I'm surprised because that's how I learned it when I learned English.

Embedded religious language doesn't require belief in using it.
