We're thinking of getting a kitten soon. Our beloved cat of 10 yrs passed away 2 mnths ago, so we are thinking of adopting a new kitty (not to replace our old cat of course, but just because we are in a new apartment and our kids would also like to have one)
What kind of kitten would be best suited to apartment which has a small patio?

TM, I've never 'bought' a pet in my life, only through friends or rescued animals. I would NEVER go to a dreaded 'pet store' to purchase one! :-(

Go to the Humane Society and adopt a cat or kitten. There are so many good wannabe pets that are just dropped off and forgotten. The ones that have been in cages seem to be grateful and become great pets. To keep them close to home make sure you have them fixed though.

Any kitten you'd like to get! Think about long haired cats vs short hair. both shed, but short hair cats can be a lot better on allergies. Good Luck, the thing to do is go to a human society and ask to play with a few kitties.

Adopt one & save a cats life there are great cats desperatly needing homes in local pounds etc - of all types mixed and pure breed - don't go buying out ofthe news papers etc. Pets are companions NOT a commodity

Adopt one, I got my kitten at a local shelter and she was a rescued stray and very skinny and beat up looking and not my first choice but her incessant meowing led me to her cage and she jumped out and latched onto me and now she's my best little companion. Let a kitty pick you!!

I don't understand what you mean by "what kind of kitten". A kitten is a kitten. Regardless of that, never let a kitten on a patio.

how about adopting a female cat?

boy cats love to roam and come home whereas a girl cat with a shier demeanour may not miss being able to go outside

A burmese would make a good house cat, and they love the company of people and kids.
