Actually, when I came to evaluate the wall situation in which I,m going to upgrade from 32 inches door to 36 inches door.
Here is what I found: 2x4 above the jack studs and a 2x10 header above that flat 2x4 .
What made this person did not use the 2x10 header directly above the jack studs

he may need to raise the header for horizontal metal traps which tie the two walls on both sides of the opening.

its a fairly common framing process the use of a 2x4 laying flat spaces the two header pieces the width of the wall. saves alittle time cutting 1/2 inch plywood for a spacer. on a opening that small the extra strength isn't needed
