I live in a 3 story apartment complex and I have neighbors in all directions but dont know who it is, it always is in the morning when I get up and in the evening when I get home. Once I came home for lunch and smelled the smoke coming into my home. Any ideas

Can you find out who it is, locate the smell better? Odds are that if you inform them it can be smelled outside they'll keep it inside. Pot really isn't that harmful, while some people might be real potheads I've never personally known anyone who was really affected by pot while unfortunately I've known plenty of people who get annoying or even aggressive when drunk. It's legal where I live and it's just stupid that in the US alcohol is legal and pot is not, that's only because alcohol is big business but has nothing to do with the actual harm either one does! If that were the reasoning it should be the other way around. Still I can understand that as long as it is illegal you don't want it going on around you, don't want the cops to raid your place thinking it's coming from you... but try to see your neighbors about it first, just seems a more neighborly thing to do. But living here where it is legal, if I had to chose between living next to someone who smoked pot or drank, I'd pick the first any time!

Call the police. Not 911. Wait till they catch place on fire to all 911. If smoke is pouring into your apartment, you may also want to notify the fire department or marshal's office. That kind of smoke is clearly a hazard, and likely against fire code if it is not contained in some way. Again, not by calling 911. If kids live their, you could also drop a note to the division of family services or to child services. Exposure to drugs is abuse in every state. Good luck. Be ready for retaliation.

Post a note on the bulletin board (or next to the mail boxes) asking the person(s) smoking "big fat doobies" to please put a damp towel at the base of their door while smoking. Just seems more neighborly than calling the police right off the bat. Of course, if they don't heed the warning...

You chose to live in an apartment, so you gotta deal with living with different families. Sorry, but you get what you pay for. I lived in an apartment complex all my life, if somebody ever came to me because I was smoking doobies or cigarettes or whatever, I'd be apalled and not pay any attention.

How are your neighbour smoking habits any of your concern? Sorry to ask, but I genuinely fail to see why should it bother you if someone's getting high near your house, provided the fact that you don't even know from which one of six or more apartments the smoke is coming from...
Just live and let live. These are my two pennies on the subject.

911

don't call 911. That just annoys the hell out of dispatchers like me. Call your local police department (NOT using 911) and report that people in your apartment building are smoking marijuana. Report it while you smell it. That way the police can go to your house and sniff out the culprit for themselves.

Call 911, definitely. Who cares about the "annoyed dispatchers". They are breaking the law & police must be called.
