I'm looking for something to take as a preventative medicine, not something like rolaids that you take just before you eat a meal. I want something you take every day like Prilosec but i was trying to stay away from it because its soooooo expensive. Is there anything else non-prescription? At the store the other day almost every single antacid was a "take before you eat" pill....

Wow, I've never asked a question and had it not answered before, even with 4 "answers". People, Im looking for the best medicine, not dietary changes or "psycho therapy". Im not gonna change my diet. I eat normally, just like everyone else. My stomach however is not normal and needs help to correct itself.

Back when I was having kids, my OB/GYN didn't want me to take Rolaids or Tums during my pregnancies. I had heartburn and sour stomach very frequently. Someone suggested that I eat a raw potato when that happens. I thought, what the heck? And it worked! Maybe you could try that without getting on some type of prescription medication. I think the starch in the potato neutralizes the stomach acid in some way.

first make sure you can't fix the problem by changing your diet. are you eating things that you know make the problem worse? make sure to get plenty of dark leafy greens. do some research on acid/alkaline diets. if this doesn't help, and even if it does help, consult a doctor and find out why this is happening. avoid red meat, alcohol, soft drinks and smoking.
