Nope, you are not alone Roxy. Even my mice have names.
Animals deserve respect, even if we eat them and wear their skins.
Horses, cats, dogs, and my parrot have all been big parts of my life.

I am also not a big fan I think that some people do it because they view pets as a possession and not a companion. It just depends how close you are to your pet obviously if the animal is like a member of the family you would be upset I would freak out if someone always referred to my 7 month old daughter as to it instead of she.

To start with I love dogs. I live on a farm and, people, whom you would think to be better since we ARE the top of the food chain, dump animals on me all the time. I do my best to take care of as many as I can. I too spend more on vet bills and food for them than for myself.
Dogs do have personalities and exhibit emotions however, if you have a male pit bull puppy, if you name him Shirley, if you dress him in frilly foo foo clown stuff. When he grows up, He is going to love you for your attention. Pets interact very well. They have no concept of he, she, it. It makes absolutely no difference to them at all.
I name most of the newbies here after car parts. What ever I'm working on when they appear. Beagle named Lug Nut. Spitz named Squeak. Sheltie named Axle. Turbo, Nitro, Blower,
4 speed, Hammer, Shifter are all mixed breeds. I call them mutts to their faces, but they don't mind cause I show them all love with my actions.
Some folks are disrespectful to animals and intend to be. Dumping an animal in the country cause you think the farmer needs another is an example of disrespect and cruelty. Many do not survive.
When someone asks " whats it's name"? they aren't being disrespectful they are actually showing care by asking. Give them a break and correct them if you must.
The pets aren't offended near as much as you are.
Channel your anger into a little more energy for the pets. Go for a walk. Throw a Frisbee. They will love it. You will feel better. The sun will still rise tomorrow. Really. I promise.
Good Luck and Keep on loving pets and people

I really dont see it as disrespect. The animal is not offened by being called a it or she(when it is a male) or he(when it is a female).Who is it disrepecting, you or the animal? When the animal is being talked about then it has nothing to do with you, just like when you are being talked about it has nothing to do with the animal.I have lots of cats and dogs on my property because people gets these animals where I live and abandon them.I could care a less what anyone calls them.I spend more money on these animals food and vet bills then what I spend on myself.disrespect
n
Definition: disregard, rudeness toward someone

Yes, it bothers me. It bothers me that people assume that dogs are ‘he’s’ and cats are ‘she’s’. I think that it offends most pet lovers.
However, when they created our grammar and language, they decided that ‘it’ was proper for animals. That has something to do with the fact that we are a higher life form.
Either way, I am an animal lover at heart and I always refer to them with the correct gender pronoun.
By the way, it is PC to ask, “What did they name the baby?” rather than say it

well, by the responses, I would guess that you are not alone in your feelings. however, I have a cat and I don't care people refer to her as an "it" (techincally she is an it). I think people use this when they cannot remember the animal's gender. I know I do, b/c I would probably be more prone to correct someone if they called my cat "he" rather than "it" and if I don't remember an animal's gender I try to be nuetral. although typically I would say "the dog" or "the cat" or the whatever...so I think you should cut people some slack.

I don't really like when people call an animal "it" instead of their name. But if the person doesn't know if the animal's a boy or a girl or the name of the animal then I don't really mind it as long as they don't say something like "Look at IT''

When people use "it" to refer to an animal, they are merely using the word because they do not know a gender for the dog and prefer not to guess wrong. It is disrespectful otherwise, however.

I know this will be difficult to comprehend but not all people are "animal lovers." Know that they aren't trying to be disrespectful when the refer to your critter as an "it" they simply don't know any better. Politely correct them and then leave it alone. When I meet a new critter and don't know the gender I will usually refer to them as male or female (ie; aren't you a handsome guy or, she's so sweet) and their human will usually pipe up with the correct gender.

Hmm I find is also disrespectful when people do that, especially after you have repeatedly told them what gender the animals is and its name. I also find it quiet annoying when people say the name wrong, for example they say “Maggie” instead of Meggie, it’s a completely different name you ignorant retard!
My former vet, whom I discontinued services with from their lack of experience in their field, always wrote and spelled my dogs name wrong, call that respectful? I call it rude.
Considering what sewwoddy wrote, that some people aren’t just that into animals, and couldn’t care less, if they referred to the as he, she “it”. From my assumption I guess those who really aren’t that into human babies can refer to them as he, she “it” too. Either way, everyone has something close and important to them, so its important we respect that.
