as stated above he broke it yesturday, after 7 hours in the emergency room they realigned it and taped it to his pinky then they put a splint on it and wrapped it with an ace bandage and told me to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon on tomorrw. last night while he was sleeping the ace bandage unraveled and the splint came off and he woke up this morning in severe pain. im not a doctor but i did my best to realign and splint it again. my question is also, at the orthopedics office can i ask them to cast it? we are also flying out of the country on thursday and i would like them to cast it with a fiberglass cast so he can at least try to enjoy the beach/pool. in a child so young would they automatically cast it?

At his age his bones are still pretty flexible and will heal fast. I doubt they will cast the finger. But maybe find a more secure way of keeping the splints together or finding some other form of splint. I know when I broke my finger playing softball as a kid they splinted my finger (middle one GREAT in class! LOL) with a metal splint that went over my finger and then taped it up...I don't know what they would use on a 4 year old or how they do them nowadays...

They do not cast a broken finger, just the splint and ace bandage is all they do.Children heal very fast, and he can probably enjoy the water activities on your vacation if you re-wrap it with the splint after wards, you will have to ask the orthopedic surgeon. My son broke his finger and it was healed in about 2 weeks.(well enough to do his regular activities)

They do not put finger's in a cast, they usually just tape them.

When on holidays wrap his hand and all the way up his arm in cling wrap the put a plastic bag on it and tape it to hold it so he can at least spalsh around in the water.

splinting is far more common than casting. the most important thing is to treat his pain. use Advil every 6 hrs and ice it frequently. make sure it stays elevated -use pillows when his is in bed. this will help with swelling. the ER will resplint if you need it.

little to none, they will probably at most put a splint (brace), but I highly doubt it will be casted.
