The kind to get is up to your personal tastes.

Sit down, work out what you want to do and where you want to go.

Go to a few bike shops in your area, see what is available, see what you like, see what you price you want to spend. Get fitted up so you an get the right size.

Cycling is not only excellent exercise, it is a very useful form of transport. Many use their bikes to combine commuting and exercise. This saves time and money.

Mountain bikes are very versatile and can be used to do most things reasonably well. But wait until you have worked out what you want to do. A more specialised bicycle might suit you better.

Yep, you have a bit of a big canvas for us to fill, so I will make some assumption and infil from there.

Mountainbiking. The first assumption is that you are looking at XC, as opposed to downhill or freeride.

First off, I would not spend a great deal on the first, try about £300. That will get you a machine with an alli frame and an RST fork. You will also get 24 gears. This is reasonable, especially in winter and will not cost a great deal to upgrade should you wish (Shimano).

Sprecialized do a reasonable model for about £350 that should suite you, although all of the manufacturers will have something in this range.

Cannondales are nice, but 4 times the price.

Generally, Trek 4300, or above. Giant, Specialized and Scott are the manufacturers I would look at. Claude Butler is also viable (Good Value).

You will not know until you sit on the bike. Try a test day, if this happens locally.

Think of a price range you want to keep in; avoid the department store bikes if you can (WalMart, Target, etc.), unfortunately the Schwinns you see in there are not the "real McCoys" (they were bought out by Pacific Cycles in late '99 along with some of the other big names). You also want to consider what kind of riding you'll be doing: If you want to go hardcore downhill or racing, full suspension may be for you; if you're just going to do casual riding for exercise, an MTB with a rigid frame(no suspension) or front shock would fit the bill. Also the landscape you intend on riding on is a good thing to consider, too. A lot of MTBs are sold with tires with aggressive tread, which will cause what's called "rollover resistance" (which will make you work harder pedalling on the street because they're made more for dirt and mud). You'll want semi-slicks (tires for street/ hard-pack dirt use). Most bike shops will change them over at no-cost. Then there are hybrids (MTB/road bike cross) or comfort bike, which can be ridden on the street and the trails without the tire change- over and have the benefit of a front shock and most are eqipped with a shock seat-post, so you have the ruggedness of a mountain bike and some of the comfort of a beach cruiser.

Your question is too broad. How much do you plan to spend?
What is your skill level? What brands do the local bike shops in your area carry? Do you plan to buy from a mass market retailer? Do you want suspension or hardtail? These are just some things you must first decide on before you make a decision. Just visit your area bike shop and let them advise you on what fits your need.

I am a mtn bike fanatic and have been through many brands. Now I am stuck on and will never own anything other than a Cannondale. Hand welded frames and superior rides! Have fun bro!
