OK... About an hour ago.. she woke up screaming in pain.. My wife got up with her... and talked to her.. then called the doctor to see what to do. The doctor asked a few questions.. told them to go to the hospital... and when they got there my daugther said she didnt hurt anymore. Now, she has NEVER been one to exaggerate pain... She is always down playing everything.. so my wife called the doctor back.. he said that they could probably go home and not be seen if she is not in pain at all anymore... Now my question is.. do you think this could possibly be her starting her period? Is that possible at 8 years old? She will be 9 in 3 weeks.. That seems aweful young... and nothing else has been "changing". OR what else do you think could be causing that pain? She was so bad before they left, she could barely even walk... HELP! Thanks

Ok please listen to me when I say this.Take her BACK TO THE HOSPITAL ASAP IF SHE SHOWS THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS.This sounds exactly like what happened to my sister. If she shows any signs of constipation along with throwing up (even if its just once) more pain in that area, pain starts staying to one side,it hurts for her to lie down she will be showing all the symptoms of Ovarian Trorision also known as a twisted ovary. If she has these signs, which can come and go take her ASAP.My sister who was 9 at the time, came down with these symptoms. When she is highly stressed she will fake constipation or stomach aches,so thats exactly what my mom thought is was. After several days my mom was so fed up thinking she was just faking as always she took her to the hospital to prove a point, come to find out,she was very wrong.(this is actually my stepsister) my stepdad called me to let me know what was going on after they arrived, they were told she sounded as she has and appendix problem. They went in the next morning to do explortory surgery only to find out her ovary had twisted and died and had to be removed.I know how scary this sounds, but it is so unknowen, that when it is found its usually to late.If your daughter shows any sign of a swollen tummy all over or in one area, this is a def. sign of ovairn torsion. Please look it up online and see if she is displaying any of these symptoms.Im at work, sorry for the poor spelling and grammer.I have to run. Please e-mail me if you have any more questions patandjill13@hotmail.com

I read a lot of the answers. It could be her period but I doubt it. This very thing happened with my son. He was crying and groaning. He could hardly get up and walk too. I took him to the hospital and he was feeling better too. But i didn't leave. The E.R. Dr said when ever children feel pain across their abdomen, but mostly on there left side its constipation. If it was the appendix the pain would start at the belly button and move to the right.Easy way to find out if its the appendix, have the child jump up. The force of landing will cause intense pain. Hope this will help. Not that I would want your child in pain, but the dr would do it and then order an x-ray.

My daughter had something very similar. She would curl up in a ball, crying in pain. She would also have a fever. This happened three times and three times she had a CT scan. For her, she ended up with two things, constipation that was so bad, her entire belly was filled. It was probably more like a blockage because she was having bms. Second, she had swollen lymph nodes in her abdomen. I gave her malt supex for the constipation and she was on an anti biotic for the lymph nodes. All though it is always best to check with the emergency room. My sisters appendix ruptered and I had mine out when I was 12. So you never know. My daughter also got her period when she was 10 and she had cramps for about 8 months before she ever got it. But since the cramps were new to her, she had a hard time dealing with them. Good luck and I hope she is okay.

If it were appendicitis she'd have been throwing up for a long time and have a burning fever...not that.
It's possible it was gas. Has she passed a lot of gas in the past? Gas pressure can be painfu.
My daughter had night terrors a few weeks ago. She felt some pain too.
As a teacher, I know that girls are starting to mature at earlier ages, and it's not uncommon to have 4th and 5th grade girls starting their periods. It's a possibility. Since it could be so new to her, could the cramping be scaring her?
OK, the ER said go home, so go home...and make an appointment for her to see her pediatrician as soon as possible.

Well I know very few people that have for the first time memstruated at the age of nine in fact 8!! Most likely thats what it is because all of the information doesn't seem to fit with some other pains around her stomach, UNDER HER BELLY-BUTTON!!

You didnt say if it was abdominal pain or what. but I am assuming so since you think she might be menstruating. Did your wife start hers at an early age? I think it is possible, but there are probably several other things that are more possible, you know. Like bad gas, seriously, or a UTI. Does she have a fever??

Don't listen to the appendix thing... she'd have a fever and likely be pretty sick (not to mention it would have hurt like the dickens when they pushed on that portion of her abdomen). If you believe it is her period, well, it's early but not unheard of. I wonder though, does she ever have pain in her limbs? My son is 8 and often wakes me up with his screams of pain in the wee hours. He has suffered from the worst growing pains I have ever seen for the past few years. I know - growing pains- you think arms and legs... suprise, he gets them in his hips, shoulders, neck, groin, and even his stomach.
The cure... a warm water bottle for smaller or .... inappropriate.... muscle groups - but massage on the back, neck, arms and legs, usually works great.

Was the pain in her abdomen? If so, then I would say that it was gas. This happened to me once, after a car accident and after an ambulance trip to the hospital, I passed gas and I was out of pain. I'm no doctor though. Her pain should be taken seriously.

Getting a first period at 9 is early but not unheard of. It could be something else though. I'd get her back to a doctor first thing in the morning.

I would have had her checked out anyway. You could have the gynecologist pull blood and check her hormone levels - they will indicate if she is getting ready to start her period. An external ultrasound may give some additional clues. I suspicion it has something to do with the intestinal track. If that had been my daughter we would have stayed at emergency and tried to find the problem. Good luck -k-
