I have Windows XP Home Edition and my computer[Dell] is infected with malware and I am unable to do a system restore. I've already saved my precious files on flash drives, floppys, and CDs. I have the installation CD but I don't know how to start the installation. I've heard that you have to wipe the hard drive but I haven't done anything because I don't want to mess anything up! I need a straight forward answer with not a lot of technical terms! PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!!

Firstly you put the installation CD in (you have to start your computer first to enable the CD drive to move). Then restart the computer. To a certain extent, the screen will show 'Push any key to boot from CD' and you have to click on any key, either Enter or Spacebar, it doesn't matter. Then wait for the installation files to be copied onto your computer. It does this automatically, so don't worry. Then it will display the drives where you can install your OS. Usually people do it on C drive. But firstly you have to Delete the C drive to erase whatever OS that have been on the C drive. Then you have to create it back. All of this can be done by following the instruction on the screen. Then follow the instruction to install the OS on the C drive. For your information, OS means Operating System, like in your case, Windows Xp.

I find it amazing that the previous answers didn't address that the system is infected! I assume you don't have any anti virus software? There are free ones available on the Internet.
http://free.grisoft.com/ is one of them. Also, you may have copied the virus on the floppies and CD's so after you install the AV on your computer, run it to identify and kill the little bastard. Then scan the floppies and CD's before copying them back on your system. Then do a repair from your installation CD, if that doesn't fix the restore problem you can reinstall or ask for help again.

Hai

First you insert windows xp (bootable cd), then start installation, after 3 steps it will ask which drive you want to install, you can select mostly C: ( default drive), if your program files in D: then select D: for re-installation. then automatically xp will load on same drive.( if you have any doubt give me mail)

The BIOS updates for a motherboard are self reliant from the OS. in case you reinstall domicile windows, no longer something will substitute on your BIOS. in case you're making use of domicile windows Vista, 7 or 8, domicile windows will upload a SLIC table interior the BIOS for activation purposes... yet that's it. The producer releases BIOS updates to strengthen compatibility with extra recent hardware (that would have been released after the Motherboard grew to become into initially synthetic). those updates oftentimes fix latest bugs interior the utility so that's counseled to in straight forward terms replace the BIOS in case you're experiencing some subject with the board. in case you have as much as date your BIOS and then put in the recent CPU, pass back into the BIOS and shipment Optimized Defaults and Restart the computing device (after saving the ameliorations). this might restoration the BIOS to that's production unit defaults (for the recent Firmware version you have put in). it won't revert it back on your previous BIOS version. If domicile windows keeps to restart, pass back into the BIOS and consider that the Motherboard Settings tournament those required from the CPU.
