Most states have a law against that sort of thing. It is for the protection of minors, anyone under the age of 18. People change a lot between 17 and 24 making it difficult to understand the motives of a 24 year old wanting to go out with a 17 year old. I just bet you are a girl at age 17 and he is 24. Lots of older guys dig those young girls, but it's usually just for that fresh meat. Of course, they won't tell you that. They act like it's all good. But 9 times out of 10, that's what it is really all about, the young sex. Beware of that and wait till you're older to date older guys. After he gets what he wants, he'll be gone and you'll be heartbroken. Save yourself the agony and send him on his way. Good luck!

The age of consent is 16 in some states, 17 in others and 18 in others.
24 is much older than your age bracket but if you must, then you should wait till your an adult to do anything more than just casually date without the physical stuff. If the other person really cares about you, and you care about that person, then why risk someone getting in trouble or going to jail? Be responsible and just adult discretion.
If you can't be judicious and discrete, then you should not try this at all. It takes maturity.

Well, if you're talking about in a strictly "legal" sense, it is most likely that yes, you are allowed. You haven't mentioned your location, but in most of the U.S.A. the "age of consent" is 16 or 17. In the states where the legal age of consent is 18, there is often an exception which allows for it when the older person isn't older than around 24.
All of these answers saying "No, you're jailbait," etc., are not necessarily accurate. Check the Wikipedia link below for your specific state law.

It is legal. If you have sex with that person, that might be illegal depending on the state (assuming you live in the U.S.) However, you can still have intercourse as long as no one who would get angry and get the authorities involved finds out. If sex is not a factor right now, even better. That one year makes a big difference to the law for some reason, and sometimes parents get upset and get them involved. But girls mature faster than boys, so it makes sense to date an older guy. I have never been attracted to guys my own age. Still, a seven year age difference might be a bit too much right now, if you have not had much life experience/previous relationship experience. But then again this person might be quite immature so it wouldn't matter anyway.

At 17, you are still 'jail-bait' in most states. The parents of a 17-year-old can have the 24-year-old male arrested for 'contributing to the delinquency of a minor', or for 'statutory rape'.
At 17, one is still considered a girl--where as at 18, one is considered a woman.

I think, it has more to do with the type of person he is. Because we cannot determine a goodness by age but by the mindset.
A person's way of thinking and their opinions is more significant than his age. Though age 24 signifies maturity and responsibility.

So what is a 17 year old going to do with a 24 year old--can't drink--no clubs---can't take him to the prom--might as well take dad----is he in school or done with it by now ??--you aren't. Is he going to look cool with your 16 and 17 year old friends---" Him--he's a pervert--he's with me !!". Stick to the kids your own age--I think he wants that tight body of yours--that's it.

It's not against the law simply to go out with any person. The age difference will be frowned upon, but as long as you don't engage in sexual activity, it's not illegal.

I almost cried when I found out my neighbor was 15 or 16. She is very pretty, but I am 20. My parents dont promote that idea. But, I am pretty good friends with her, regardless.
I say no, sorry.
