August 2, 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Don't let the common misconception that this part of the conflict is unrelated.

Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 claiming that historically it is their 19th province. A coalition of forces led by the United States expelled Iraqi forces in February 1991. The cease fire was signed and from 1991 until 2003 there was a no fly zone imposed to protect the Kurds in the north and Arab shi'a in the south this along with economic sanctions were in place until Iraq met the conditions of the cease fire. Not meeting those conditions the United States again attacked Iraq in March 2003 to overthrow its leader Saddam Hussein.

The war in Iraq stated in 2003, on March the 3rd. It was a continuation of the war on terror, of which, after the bombing of the world trade center in 2001 on the 11/11, the invasion of Afganistan took place, in the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. The US soon turned its eyes on Iraq, second on its list of the axis of evil, being Afganistan, Iraq and North Korea.
