Put on some music. That usually gets my brain active because the lyrics to songs reminds me of things that have happened in the past.

You can also play 21 questions.
You tell her that you are either, ANIMAL, VEGETABLE or mineral and she has 21 yes or no questions she can ask you to find out what object you are.

It's an ice breaker and reveals something about each person's personality depending on what object they chose to be.

The 1st question is usually, "Are you bigger than a bread box?"

If that sounds too lame for your taste, just start asking questions about things like, her first kiss.
What do her parents do?
What is her favorite kind of music?
What does she think her best feature is?
What's her favorite zoo animal?
Has she ever been in a play? What was it like?
If she were rich, where would she want to go?
What's her favorite vacation spot?
Has she ever played any sports?
What is her favorite meal?
What's her favorite movie?

Actually, you could probably just browse through some of the questions here on Yahoo Answers and get some really good ideas of questions to ask if the conversation dries up.

Do research.1) Find out what she likes and 2) Be up-to-date about current events so if any awkward silences come along, you can segue into "So, did you hear about...x". It's a start. Sounds like you might want to date her so maybe you should start participating in some of the same activities so you have something to mutually laugh and talk about.

Maybe have a few topics mapped out in your mind before you see her...that way when there is that silence, you've got backup! Over time, those awkward silences will fade...and trust me...it's ok to be silent once in a while! :) (PS...it's a fact that people like talking about themselves...so show interest and start asking her questions...likes, dislikes, etc!) Good luck!

enzo32ferrari's dating tips...for guys:

Topic: ...........................umm...

Follow some of these steps to stop awkward silences:

1. Get another topic going. Before you leave the house, think up some backup topics to get started if that ever happens again. Just don't bring the backup topics up in a conversation so that you don't get drained of your backups.

2. If its a really intimate moment, look her in the eyes and just smile. She might let you lean into her and just kiss.

3. If you're going somewhere, just say "lets keep moving" or something like that.

Awkward silences mean that you're both just shy...thats all. Nothing else. They also mean that you both like each other. Thats good. That means that you both are "warming" up to each other, and you both are getting to know each other...there are just "hiccups" in the conversation.

Awkward silences are to be embraced man!!
take advantage of them and just look at her with adoring eyes. just think about how awesome it is to even get a chance to talk to her, much less date her, your eyes will do the rest. the worst thing you can do is keep talking so there isn't an awkward silence because you will say to much or try to be funny and you'll just be silly.

I think everyone has these moments of silence. Someone once told me that that's when the angels fly by. Sometimes you need a moment of silence to regroup your thoughts. However, the best remedy for these silent moments, is to simply ask her a question about herself. As long as she is talking, you don't have to worry about talking yourself. Just remember to listen and hang on every word that she says. She will respect you for being such a good listener.

You need not feel awkward because it happens with everybody. You make others to talk more. You put such kind of questions that the other person will be very much interested to speak and don't forget to have an encouraging smile on your face.
