My boss asked me today about my personal life, which is none of her business, one day; this same person even asked me how I could afford the braces on my teeth!! People at my job have nothing better to do than to pry into my life, and I want to put a stop to it.

How do you say," That's none of your business.", without sounding rude and cruel?

Ask them "Why do you want to know" with a big smile on your face, everytime someone asks you something, you don't want to answer. Hope this helps. All the best!!

Wow. I've never had a boss be so nosy. But when it comes down to it, I'd just say I focus on my job when I am working..

As far as braces, simply say I can budget very well. This is similar to people at my work, also. I have more because I don't spend my time in bars, and this lady that is going bankrupt still wears a brand new outfit in every day.....people don't look at the whole picture when they throw out the nosy questions. Or you could say, I made it a priority. Short answers, that doesn't tell whether you really could afford it or not.........I just wonder why they don't live their own lives? I think this is annoying, too....If at all possible, keep busy when she's around and say I'll have to talk later after I complete this task. Here's a funny one, I used to have a nosy lady ask me so many questions, I got sick of it....so, one day I told her I'll have to get back to ya after break.....well, (smile) I didn't say which break or what day of what year.........Haaaaaa! Just keep taking the fun out of them approaching you...

Fae, be as polite as you can, and tell them that you do not like to discuss such things at work, or it is personal, and I would rather not talk about it.
It would appear that the boss is fishing for information as to how you can do certain things for reasons that might not be in your best interest.
One thing you can do, if there is a HR department where you work is to tell them what is going on, and that this activity is creating a hostile environment for you. Any one trying to dig into your past, or personal business without just cause, such as hiring information, or a legal investigation, are breaking the law. If there is no HR contact the local Attorney referral service, and ask for help from them. If you can not find the referral service, ask a local attorney, or the city/county prosecutors office for where a referral office might be found. If they should ask why, tell them. By the way, I am going to guess that you know, but I am going to say it anyway. Female boss or not, you are still representative of a legally recognized minority and have rights, use them.

We must work with the same ppl!!!! as for the braces, my answer would have been, well i kno how to budget my money and not blow it on things i dont need.!!!
i have tried to be polite and it doesnt seem to work, so my new answers are simple, when i get asked about how do i afford some things, i say wow i didnt kno i had to check with every body at work before i bought something!!!
good luck, and if u end up sounding cruel, oh well, people need to keep out of your business

I deal with things like that and much worse everyday at work.
I have told my boss off so many times. I hate people who
ask questions about my personal life, who I hardly know
especially. People ask about money, when I'm getting
married, why I don't have kids and all sorts of things.
So I have no idea why they even care, They are just nosey
but everyonce in awhile when I get asked a question I
just make something up, it gives them something to talk
about, I just wish I had the time to gossip, but I must be
one of those stupid people who actually work, when I go to
work.

That's a tough one! I go thru the same thing. I try to give very vague answers or smart *** answers if I can think of them at the time. If you get a good answer on here email me so I'll know how to handle them also.

Personally, I'd answer with humor. If someone asked me how I'm affording things, I would have said "I robbed the blind man in the corner." Of course, I'll be the first one to laugh, so they know I'm not trying to be rude.

It's not rude and cruel to say 'Sorry, but I'd rather not discuss personal stuff'. I don't think it's wrong to ask personal questions but they shouldn't press you after that.

you can say "i would rather not talk about that" or "that is my personal life and has nothing to do with work". or try turning the tables and start asking her all sorts of personal questions. mabey that would bother her and she will stop. or it could backfire and she will think that you are now friends and she'll accaully tell you.
