To those who wonder how to give it to the cat: My cat actually likes it and likes to lick it off my finger. Oddly enough.

Yes, of course. The petroleum jelly is probably the cheapest and most effective home remedy for hairball, but it's also the one most difficult to convince the cat to swallow. When I've run out of commercial hairball remedy for my cat, I give him a dollop of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to ease hairballs trhough the intestines. Never did any harm. But as with any hairball remedy, never make it as a daily part of your cat's diet.

Found this info:
To treat for hairballs, you can use a small amount of petroleum jelly given either directly in the mouth or else smeared on the paws or body. Most cats will anxiously clean themselves off to get rid of the petroleum jelly and in doing so will swallow it. Petroleum jelly will tend to lubricate the offending hairball and allow it to pass safely out the rectum. It is important that you give enough medicine to be effective, and this usually means ½ 1 teaspoon full for 2 to 3 days in a row. Mineral oil is NOT recommended as a treatment, since it is much easier for a struggling cat to inhale the material, potentially causing pneumonia.

I have a problem with this. Petrolium is a carcinagen. petrolium of any kind injested can cause cancer. Why would you subject yourself or pet to that danger? If the cat has a bad problem withthat their are foods that help. And if you need to the vet can give your cat a shot that eliminates the problem. It amazes me how many awful things americans have been fooled into thinking is safe. I am being more and more careful on looking everything up before I shove it down my pets throat. After all your poor little pets life is at your mercy!

Yes, this is actually a hairball remedy...if you read the ingredients of any OTC hairball medication you will notice the first ingredient is petroleum jelly. My vet would recommend this to people all the time. I would suggest a small amount 2-3 times a week.

Yes, it's great to stop, or prevent hairballs. A gob on the finger a few times a week is great. We had a cat who totally loved it, and would lick it greedily off the finger. Current cat, we have to shove it in.

Yes, it's fine. Petroleum jelly is vaseline. Vaseline is just a brand. It's Vaseline brand petroleum jelly.

Petroleum jelly in small amts is fine..it helps pass the hairballs..just make sure that you do not leave it sitting around without the lid on, or your cat will get into it..
We had that happen with one of our cats one time..and all I can say...is if that cat needs to get to his litterbox...NO ONE stand in his way!!! LOL

yes, but only very little amounts. Smear a little bit in their food 1 or 2 a month to decrease furball issues.

If you put it on the cat s nose, he/she will lick it off. I ve been using this remedy in conjunction with hairball food, and it works well.

Why would the cat want to? It is not flavourful. But it is not harmful either. You can injest it too with no ill effects.
