I am reading this book, it is just a book and in it a statment was made that had me pondering this question.
You are with somone you love and plan on staying with that person forever but for whatever reason you do not get legally married as in filing the paperwork, instead you pledge youselves to one another in private before God only.
Are you married?

This is a hypothetical question. I am married both legally and spiritually for 9 years. Just something I read had me wondering what other people considered marriage.

In every state I know after a certain length of time living together you are legally married by common law.

Depends on the state. In most places if you hold yourselves out as husband and wife and live together for 10 years you are considered "common law" married and qualify to file a joint federal tax return. This only applies to man-woman relationships to the best of my knowledge. homosexual unions are only recognized in a few places and still do not allow for joint filing.

Not by the laws of man.
Marriage is not a private thing.
When you get married you want to tell everyone so to do it in private before God sounds like something fishy, but you can be married in gods eyes without getting legally married, but why wouldn't do it by the laws of the land as well.

I have been married and I was with him for ten years before
we got married. Our marriage only lasted four months.
I knew before hand that things were not going well, and he
wanted to get married I guess he thought it would change
things but it didn't. I did get a divorce in 2000.
There is nothing wrong with not getting married, and making
a pledge before god to eachother is only really meaningful
to you or to you both. Even if you get married you don't
know what the future holds. It may not be gods plan for
you to be together.

If you consider yourself married then congrats but legally you need to register and sign a marriage certificate with witness. My wife and I did it at city hall and had our own ceremony.
If you don't want to do that check your State's common law marriage laws for how long you must share the same address to be considered common law married.

Married in the site of GOD but not legally married and we are to obey the laws of the land that do not arbitrarily go against the Word of GOD.

Legally, you are not married, unless you have been together in cohabitation for a number of years to qualify as common-law marriage.
It doesn't matter what the church or your god may say. We are ruled by society's laws.

No. Example. In the bible, in ancient times, marriage was a contract even at engagement. Nowhere is there, anywhere in scripture, the example of two people just standing before God and agreeing to be married.
As Christians, the bible is our example.
