Are there enlightened beings in the world todaY?

A crapload! Asia is teeming with them. The most famous one would be the Dalai Lama. =) Of course, if you were interested in meditating or something, try the Life Bliss Program if they ever come around to your area. The founder of the program is an enlightened person =)

Btw, everyone has the potential to become enlightened. And it has nothing to do with your religion, just meditation and experiencing bliss.

Enlightened is a broad description. Many eastern religions use the term enlightenment. According to Taoism many can become enlightened by just being one with the world. The Buddhism belief is that it can take many lifetimes to achieve ultimate enlightenment.

There are many of us out here. We have learned to think for ourselves, and live good lives, without the threat of a mythical deity.

I would say there are some. Some gurus are enlightened, but most are hoaxes. If I had to give an example of someone who I believed was enlightened, it would be Mata Amritanandamayi, also known as the "hugging saint."

How would we know? Most ancient texts make it clear that we cannot judge someone elses state if we are not also enlightened.
