Hi..
The protein quantity required by a person is 1g per kg body weight. That means if you are weighing 50 kg you require 50 g of protein daily. Ideally if you take ample amount of eggs, non-vegetarian food, milk, milk products, pulses and cereals you meet the above requirement and do not need any supplement.
But if you are an athlete or a sports person or work out for one hour or more on a regular bases then you require protein supplements.
During extra activity there is a breakdown of muscle protein. So to repair and form new muscles you need extra protein. For that matter you can take whey protein or individual amino acids from any good brand like GNC, optimum or universal.

Yes it is very good to take whey protein supplement. The reason is because whey protein is free of all the fat and other stuff in meat you dont want. If you weight 200 lbs you need between 200-220 grams of protien. It would cost way more to get all that protien in food plus you would be getting a lot of other junk like fat.

I've been using a whey protein that is vanilla flavor from my gym LIFETIME FITNESS. I don't know if you can get it unless your a member but I'm sure someone makes one. I mix the protein with fruit juice for a well balanced meal of carbs and protein. I have tried myoplex shakes (available at GNC) in the past as well and they weren't that bad either. I don't drink shakes everyday but it is good when you don't have time to have a real meal. The human body needs protien every few hours to keep fat burning/muscle building enzymes functioning correctly.
