brushing too hard can make your gums recede. so does acidic foods and drink. you may want to start drinking more milk to help cancel out the acid in your mouth. i don't drink milk, so i chew on a tums every now and then.
you may have gum disease. make sure you floss everyday to help prevent gingivitis. do some research online to find out if you have gum disease. you're gums may look slightly inflamed or red...or possibly bleed easy when flossing or even brushing. i found out that i had a mild form of it from not flossing enough and this was causing my gums to recede. also i drink a lot of soda which probably added to the cause. I heard that there's a new toothpaste out called ProNamel made by Sensodyne...which should help if your experiencing any sensitivity from the exposed root, and also it helps to keep the enamel on your teeth from degenerating any further.
unfortunately, according to many professional dental websites that i have read, there is no way to fix the damage...only to prevent it from getting any worse.
i hope this helps. good luck.

No special toothpaste is needed. You need to use a "soft toothbrush" and brush "gently." Keep in mind it's not how hard you brush that counts, it's how thoroughly that you do it. Try to spend at least 2 minutes on brushing, using gentle strokes, like a nervous motion making sure to brush each tooth on all sides and top at least twice a day along with flossing. You need to clean all the tissue too, but not with such vigor. If you think you may have gingivitis or any other problems, you should see your dentist and let him evaluate your condition. Good luck and I hope I've been of some help.

Once the tissue is gone, it won't grow back. Some patients have surgery to replace tissue lost due to brushing too hard.

Additional information: If your recession is from a hard tooth brush or scrubbing too hard this information is correct. If it's from lack of or poor hygiene then you need to see your dentist. Some people like to give the thumbs down when they don't know anything about whats is being commented on so don't let them make your mind up. Information that has been given so far is correct to some degree, from all participants. Any questions not answered thoroughly should be directed to your dentist. These are your teeth and only you, with the help of your dentist can maintain your dental health to retain them, for the rest of your life.

No special toothpaste needed, just use a soft (or extra soft) toothbrush only, and make sure that you're not brushing too long. 2-3 minutes is all it takes, and you don't need to scrub super hard either.

You should see a periodontist. Another answer suggested there is nothing you can do, that is absolutely not true. Yes you need to brush your teeth and FLOSS, but you also need to have them professionally cleaned by a dental hygienist. If your gum recession is severe you can have tissue grafts and save your teeth. DON'T wait till your teeth fall out!!

First of all you need deep cleanings every 6 months at least. This is a serious problem.Once your gums are gone.they won't be coming back.Take really good care of them. The bacteria causes the recession. You have to make sure to clean well,so it won't seat around your gums.Floss, brush, rinse your mouth with mouthwash.Use a soft toothbrush and be very gentle while brushing.People think, harder they brush, cleaner their mouth will be.WRONG.That is the worst thing to do to your gums. One of the causes of gum recession.Brush your tongue as well.KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN,FREE OF BACTERIA.That is the key of healthy gums and teeth.
