Getting people out that didn't heed the warning to leave, getting them food and water til they got out and now the biggest problem is to try and tear down what was destroyed and rebuild again. We live about 40 mile north and were without power for 6 weeks, we didn't leave, had not flooding, just no power. We had generators and have well water and sewer system so we were OK. I think it will take roughly 10-15 years for things to get semi-normal again.

a million. because of the fact typhoon Katrina replaced into no longer charted to hit New Orleans too difficult. If the levees had no longer broken, the recent Orleanites might have in basic terms some timber and obtainable minor flooding from rainwater to repair. 2. Flooding, emergency evacuation 3. in all probability besides because it may desire to have long gone. while you're arranged to dig a ditch yet get the order to dig a canyon, what are you going to do? 4. properly, some human beings have been ignorant a**es approximately all of it, and a few spread out their hearts and wallets to the individuals of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans with volunteering and donations. 5. The media ought to be fixed to concentration on all aspects of a disaster section, no longer in basic terms one unintentional one. asserting Katrina hit New Orleans is like throwing a watermelon at an ant and anticipating it to hit in basic terms the ant.

Getting people OUT of the area before it hit...
Not eveyone listened did they?

Making local and state government responsible for their actions…
Again, that didn’t work. Re-elected! The local government dropped the ball when it came to the safety of their own people….

Having local and state government intervene with the federal government on behalf of the victims of Katrina… The federal government can’t even balance a budget or make a bill without if taking months for it to pass. What makes ANYONE think that they can act without bipartisan bickering. They will blame the other side just to get votes. There is a chain of command. In many cases it starts like this.. Individual needs help, local groups (churches, hospitals, fire, police, etc.. ) respond, if those groups need help they call the state.. State sends in aid, (usually national guard or state police)… State needs help. They contact their congressman/woman and then it is heard at a congressional level.

Now they are in the rebuilding stage.. You go to the STATE office if you need help and it goes UP the chain of command. Always been that way... Always will unless they change the laws. Then every state will have to vote on it for it to become law..

There has to be more than 3. Besides rescuing the survivors, they had to find and bury the dead, clean up all that destruction, find homes for the survivors, I know my state had some survivors come here. There's also the matter of clean water and food. I think finding the dead would be the worst for me. I don't think I could handle seeing deceased children.

The lack or difficulty of communication that underlied all the other problems was the main thing. From what I recall, the LA governor put in a request for supplemental communications equipment before the storm hit, but the equipment never arrived.
