I use virtual machine software, it allows you to make more than one operating system virtually, I use VMware, I have tow XP and one Linux, you can connect them as a network too, it's really awesome!
If you plan to use this kind of software you need to make sure that you have at least 1 GB RAM.

You first have to create separate partitions and the install the OS. Only one partition can be active at a time.
Also, I read somewhere that there is a totally self-contained LINUX USB drive that is available and easy to use. Might want to consider that for your LINUX set-up.

I would suggest using Partition Magic's OS boot software to give you a prompt when you turn on the computer to choose which OS to boot into (you'll need to partition your HD and install each OS into each partition).

say we have a 200GB HDD......
in xp boot disc when it asked for partitioning..
make a primary partition for XP 60GB
make a logical drive for vista 60GB
leave the remaining 80GB unpartitioned
proceed the installation of OS in this order:
XP>Vista
after you have install vista then install any linux distro
do the remaining partitioning in linux. say 1 more partition for linux boot 70GB & swap partition for 10GB
Do not write to MBR but to the partition of linux boot instead.
(e.g. if you are installing on hda then do not write on hda MBR but on the linux boot partition (e.g. hda3))
make a linux boot disk!
after install use linux boot disk boot into linux.
as i remember the command for making the boot file is
dd if=/dev/hda3 of=/mnt/floppy/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
of coz change hda3 if your linux boot partition is not on hda3
final bit is to copy the linux.bin from floppy to XP boot partition
chk this file out:
