My dog just had puppies, and for some reason, she just up and left them. We don't know where she went, but she's gone now, and we're stuck with the newborn puppies. Does anyone know of any possible reason why she left like that?

Try to get her to come back, lick them and keep them warm.
Why she would leave lke that, I don't know. Didn't you have her inside in a safe warm place?

As one answer suggests she may be a first time Mom and isn't sure what to do.
Are you sure she delivered all of the pups or if there was one more left and she was still in labor had having a hard time delivering and she went off somewhere to have the last pup and could possibly have a stuck puppy that could cause her to die while trying to deliver?
She may have gone off to be sick from all that she ingested while cleaning her puppies.
Most dogs eat and shortly after eating they go to do their business and perhaps she has done this as well as going to throw up all she ingested.
She may have just been totally exhausted and went off to rest up for the long responsibility of caring for the new pups.
How long has she been gone?
Handling the puppies while she was having them would NOT affect her accepting them or not as one answer suggests.
How long have you had her? She knows this is where she gets fed and will most likely be back whether she wants to nurse and care for the puppies or not.
Until she gets back, keep the puppies warm /dry and if she isn't back in an hour or so,you need to atleast go to Wal-Mart and see if you can get some supplemental formula and bottles for feeding and if nothing but bottles are available atleast get some goats milk for them.
Depending on the size of the puppies, you might even have to go to the pharmacy to get eye droppers or syringes to feed the puppies with.
If infact you are "stuck" with this dilemmma,be sure to feed the puppies every 2 hrs to begin with and their FULL tummies will let you know if they are getting enough as well as their stools.
When the MOM returns, until you know she is going to take care of the pups, don't let her leave again.Confine her and her pups and IF she won't try to take care of the pups unless she threatens their lives, you might have to hold her down a for a few days until she gets the idea and takes to the idea.

Please keep me posted on this dilemma. . . maybe there is something more I can do for you.

you need to find the mother if it hasnt been that long. she might need help. sometimes the mother (mainly with first litter) can have a puppy still stuck inside that could cause her to hurt and possibly die. other than that you should just leave the door open or if she has a doggie door then dont lock it. she will come back she could also have needed time to recoup after the birth and she will be back. think of the time that it happened if it has been quite a while start looking

How could the mum dog just leave without you knowing were she is? Did you leave the front door open or something? Find her and encourage her to be with her puppie, unless you want to bottle feed them all.

Possibly a first time Mum and didn't know what to do. Contact your local vet there may be a "surrogate" mum available.

if this is her first litter than she might not know what to do with them. if has nothing to do with if you touched them or not.

i've touched and held my dogs puppies from the 1minute they were born, i helped deliver each pup so that has nothing to do with it
