because the only times that many pray is when they need something or something good is going on they do not pray out of love for God

Don't agree with your assertion that "Most people" say it, but I understand what you mean and my answer is sarcasm. However it is interesting how many people are sensitive to any question which is ambivalent regarding the existence of a supreme being and are quick to defend any perceived insult to that perception even when, as in this case, the question is more about hypocrisy than spirituality.

This is another question in the "Why do atheists call on the name of the Lord in times of trouble?" vein. Prove your assertion that people say that commonly, then explain why many people agreeing on something necessarily makes it true.

The same reason that when something bad happens they say there is no God. I think people just need to to believe that whatever happens, it is nothing to do with them.
