Stomach acids make your food (already mushy from chewing) into a more liquified mess. If you are sick, the absortion of water&nutrients slows or stops therefore making you have runny diarrhea (dont mean to be nasty but that's what happens). In a nutshell, there are many places where your food turns into mush. the stomach, the small intestine and nutrients get absorbed into your large intestine.
