i'm asking this because i saw someone else post a question, "why isn't college free? since education is so important for our future, why isn't it free?"

i posted this question because it's a question i never really thought about until i saw the question posted just now. just went with the flow, elementary through high school is free, college isn't.

how come taxes cover the cost of public schools (elementary through high school) but college isn't?

Because elementary through high schools helps you acheive the BASIC skills that you need to function in society. It is in the best interest of the society that you acheive those basic skills, as well as in your own best interest. College isn't for everyone, and it is specialized. You go to continued education depending on your own skills and ambitions. This is what you choose to do to improve your life depending on your abilities. If it were free and given to you, nobody would have to work for it and college would be reduced to a joke like high school is.

But public state colleges are subsidized by the state through tax money. That is why they are relatively inexpensive. They are still quite expensive, but compared to private universities, they are much cheaper.

Because college is not necessary for you to be able to be a fully functional member of society and have a job that is worth minimum wage.

College, however, is necessary (to an extent) if you want to have a high salary job. (It is not the government's duty to give you a high salary, it's yours.)
