I'm a decent tipper for the service industery, like takng a cab, getting a haircut, or dining out at a resturaunt, (even odering out). Pretty much anything where someone has to come to me to satasfy me, or make me look good.

Why do people tip at a starbucks (and some tim hortons)? but not at a McDonalds. It's still counter service with a fixed menu. thier not coming to you, you're going to them and then tipping! Why?

I do not think it appropriate to tip unless the person does you a service. To me, Mcdonalds and Starbucks and similar, is just filling an order, not performing a serivce. I do not tip these people. And as tipping is vonuntary anyway, you are under no obligation to contribute to the tip jar.

It depends on the company policy. If McDonald's allowed their employees to have a tip jar I'm sure they would. People who don't tip when they should usually get remembered... and get "special" service the next time.

A lot of the customers tip the baristas in my store because they do a good job. They know the customers' names, drinks, family members, what they do for a living, what they did last night, etc. Baristas do not earn a ton of money. Customers are saying thank you for what the baristas do everyday- work hard. Plus, the baristas benefit from the tips. A lot of my baristas are college kids who need the extra money. Tipping is nice and it makes them feel appreciated. Keep it up!

The only reason people tip is because they put tip boxes that corporate told them to put by the register. The idea is when you tip an establishment you are more inclined to come back again because you have invested in the establishment. Its a marketing tool.

My standards for tipping are pretty much par with yours. it seems pretty rediculous to tip a cashier at starbucks! i just ignore those tip jars. My mom taught me to tip good, she was a waitress for a while, but starbucks, come on! oh well.

good question! I've seen tip jars at some restaurants. Not established heavyweights like McDonalds, Burger King, Jack in the Box, etc, but at some Mexican food restaurants and some bar and grills. I guess putting a tip jar out creates mindrape, where we feel guilty and open up our wallets. The cost of living is sky high these days, so i can see why they put the tip jar out.

At the above mentioned Mexican restaurants, i never tip. Why? Because 9 out of 10 times, the person behind the counter is illegal. Why should i contribute to their thumbing their noses at OUR immigration laws? someone has to stand up to them!

You don't have to and I doubt anyone would call you a cheapo. I find the tip jar convenient, say, if the cashier is about to give me a few pennis or nickels in change, I just tell him/her to put them in the jar. Otherwise, I save the change for the homeless person outside.

Because they work for less than minimum wage and want you to cry them a river...or get the cheese! And, GUESS WHAT! Those morons who frequent some place that sells coffee for $65 a pound, think they are worthy of tipping because if they weren't toppid in the first place, they wouldn't be patronizing StarBucks which is the BIGGEST contributor to GLAD! Along with WELLS FARGO BANK! raaaaaaaaaallllllllllphhhhhhh!

SNAFU -- SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!
