I take it your husband's in a coma then? nothing personal but tiling takes a bit of time and effort, even for people who have done it before.
If you're adamant that your going to do it then here's a brief run down.
1st- Go to B&Q and buy a tiling kit.
2nd- make sure the wall your doing is clean and free of dirt/loose plaster.
3rd- gently tack a wooden strip (10-15mm?) along the bottom edge to support the first row of tiles,(this will be removed when adhesive sets). This should be level.
4th- slap the adhesive on the wall using the applicator(supplied in kit), work on 1 metre squared to start with.
5th- place the first tile in the most visible corner and gently push onto the wall using slight 'rocking' movement.
6th- Use the little plastic spacers(provided in kit) to create the spaces for the next tile.(spacers should be pushed right in to allow grouting to hide them).
7th- Place next tile against spacers adjoining previous tile and gently rock into position.
8th- Continue tiling in this way, slapping adhesive onto wall as you cover previous mix.
When completely tiled leave to set for a good 24 hours.
Then grout between the tiles, covering the plastic spacers as you go.
Remove wooden support and grout space left.
Wipe away excess with damp cloth, leave to set for 30 minutes/an hour then polish tiles with dry cloth.
Well done, job done

well, i suppose the 'correct' way is to first measure your wall, find the centre as this is your start point.
next, you need a straight, level line maybe 2" above the skirting.
then a long straight length of wood along the straight line.
start from your centre mark, the wood will stop the tiles slipping down the wall, make sure you have tile spacers to keep the gaps the same, dont rely on matchsticks.
i prefer to put the adhesive to the wall first, then push the tile in until level, there will be plenty of cutting needed at the edges/top/bottom of the wall.
once all your tiles are on, then you can grout.

laying tile is a 2-4 day process. First you must apply the tile to the surface, then after 24 hours, you can grout the joints and wait another 24 hours, then you need to apply a grout sealer to seal the grout after another 24 hours.

i think you'd better leave that job to someone else, especially when you assume you can do it in a matter of hours...the surface needs to be prepped, needs to be layed correctly with the right tile cement, grouted afterwards (and not to mention "washed" several times to make the grout look right) and then sealed...good luck trying to cut tiles if needed, thatll probably wake up your significant other.

install tiles first, grout last. you can do some simple math to figure out where to start.

You sound as if you don't know anything about tiling. I would get a tiler it's cheaper in the long run
