Okay, a general dentist treats cavities, and also addresses oral health and hygiene. Also they work with dentures, partials, bruxism (grinding). You do not techniqually have to be a board qualified specialist to do orthodontia (braces), endo (root canals) implants , or minor oral surgery. General dentists dable in all of the above. So dentists make a huge amount of money if they own their own practice. 200,000 + take home a year after expenses.

Orthodontists charge on average 5,ooo dollars per case. They see a huge volume of patients. Usually about 20-25 patients daily in a busy practice...you do the math.

Oral Surgeons are the gifted dentists whom studied some in medical school as well. They don't do just extractions, but sometimes emergency cranio-facial surguries or recontructive surguries for lets say a car accident or a gun shot wound. They probably work less hours than an honest general dentist and play way too much golf. They make the most money definately about half a million a year.

Hope this helps.

I thought I might add my thoughts in on this one. To correct Drea, there is a little more to it than what she thinks.

General Dentist does more than just hygiene and simple fillings. They restore teeth by way of amalgam or composite restoration, crowns, bridges, on lays, in lays, root canals, partials, dentures, various bleaching methods, and other appliances needed to correct dental problems. They also perform extractions, surgical extractions, some tissue or flap surgery. They diagnosis for orthodontic treatment and evaluate many other problems that may need further specialized treatment. When you’re in a car wreck and knock out all of your front teeth, who do you see to put them back in and try to save them? That's right, your dentist.

Oral Surgeons perform many of the same procedures that a general dentist does, but they also specialize in doing more serious surgical procedures that involve any area of the mouth, face and bones of the face. What are Oralmaxofacial surgeons? He is the one you go to when you need a serious surgical procedure performed, and yes if you just need all your wisdom teeth extracted and want to be put to sleep for it too. Now if you’re in that same car wreck and your face is pretty badly broken up along with the teeth knocked out, who will you call? That's right, the OS.

Now for the Orthodontist. Some people may think it's all a vanity or cosmetic job that he has. Those same people have no idea of what this dentist job entails. Sure there are the simple cases of straighten the teeth and getting them into correct alignment. But do any of you know how or what all that involves? There are the much harder cases that they must deal with too. Those are the ones they trained those extra years so hard for. The patients who are missing permanent teeth or who's palate is in such an under growth pattern that the lowers look like they belong to someone else and the upper teeth don't resemble teeth they are so jumbled up with no where to come in except on top of each other. Or the ones who have teeth coming in through the palate or under the tongue. There is so much that the average person just takes for granted that an orthodontist just "does" which is something I hope I'm making you understand. They do more than just correct the alignment and straighten the teeth so they look pretty when a patient smiles. You need to think how many people out there would never let you see them smile until they had orthodontic treatment. I won't mention the car wreck again, but the orthodontist does work with the surgeon and general dentist on those cases.

As far as salary for each it would really depend on the size practice, patient load, and referrals from each other.

A general dentist can make a very nice salary with a lot of hard work, but must love his job and care for his patients.

An Oral Surgeon can make just as much or even more since he is in a specialty field and his work usually demands more expertise than that of a general dentist. He too must love his work and care for his patients.

An Orthodontist can make a very nice salary and is also in a specialty field and has a great deal of expense in his practice with equipment and materials. He has to love his work as well and care for each and every patient.

Out of the three ranking highest to lowest salary would be OS, Orthodontist, General Dentist.

general dentist : examines mouth/hygiene/fills cavities/treats gum disease.

orthodontist : assess patient mostly cosmetically. Ex: braces

dental (oral) surgeon: does extractions, treats TMJ ,etc. Ex: Wisdom teeth.

I would assume a surgeon would make more. (more responsibility)
