He is going to the vets tomorrow (public holiday today) but I'm worried about him. There is a foul dirreah leaking out that just started this morning and he has withdrawn from coming near any of us. He hasn't eaten for two nights now ( unusual) but is drinking water. Apart from this he is alert but aloof and smelly. Should I try to give him a laxitive or just wait until the vet sees him? I realise that they can swallow things that get blocked but I thought I had been real careful about that so I'm just not sure!

sounds to me like PARVO, my new puppy had that, and she was in terrible shape. The vet said to put her down, cause treatment is expensive and they don't get a 50/50 chance for survival...
We took her home to try to get her through, we forcefed her every 15 minutes with 15ml gatorade. Every 15 Minutes, all through the night as well. The next morning we started to mix it up with Chickenbroth and we found that she started to get interested in food. She didn't actually eat until that night, late, and it was lunchmeat... but she ate...
We bought her Feb 16th, she started to get sick the next day and we had a vet check on 22nd... the Vet was amazed she pulled through, he gave her a 30% chance for survival...
She started eating late on the 24th and now she's doing great. ...making up for lost time...
If your puppy got parvo and you decide not to put it down, you won't get the money back you paid for it IF it dies... but on the other site, if you do put it down, you'll never know what would have been if....
good luck, i hope it's just a stomach bug, or worms...
Let me know how this turns out.

you'll be in my prayers,
Mel

just for the record, the vet kept her the night 22nd to 23rd, and she looked close to her last breath when i picked her up at 9am on the 23rd

OK, I just went through this two weeks ago. At first I thought my dog had Parvo or Coronavirus, but he had all his shots, as I hope yours has. However, it ended up that he had swallowed a penny, which had lodged in his stomach instead of passing through his system, which was detected through X-rays. It was removed through endoscope...through his mouth, luckily. He ended up having heavy metal (zinc) poisoning from the penny dissolving in his stomach. It turns out this is very common, and most pennies are 99.5% zinc, hence the poisoning.

Just keep him VERY warm and comfortable until he sees the vet.

I can't help but ask...is he having any foam like substance coming from the mouth? And, is it JUST diarreah, or is he having a foul-smelling leak from his rear end?

Email me if he does. emichelle1113@yahoo.com.

You are doing the right thing getting to the vet ASAP. Make sure they do x-rays and blood work, and try to take them a stool sample.

I will pray for your dog.

i agree parvo would be my guess too. if he is really smelly like a rotten sewer then you will have two options if he makes it through the night. the vet will tell you to leave him there and they will treat him but it is very expencive and he still might not make it cause no one is there over night. or you can ask them to sell you a bag of fluids ( iv) and do it yourself but that would mean that you will be up all day and night giving it to him every 15 minutes till he gets his strength back. it is cheaper but will require that you be up and there still is no guarantee. i was one of the lucky ones i was up with mine for 2 days and got him through it. good luck on that one

Has he had his shots? I would lean towards Parvo with this one... Don't give him a laxative... Can you get him to eat anything at all?? This sounds like a very serious job for the vet to take care of.. NOW!
Why would you give a laxative to a dog with diarrhea?? Do you know what a laxative is?

Sounds like your dog has a very serious problem! If his stomach seems upset, you can give him a little pepto bismol (yes I know...silly). The ratio is 1cc/10 pounds of dog. That will at least settle his tummy for tonight and hopefully long enough to help him eat something so that he doesn't feel so icky! GOOD LUCK!

don't try to give him anything . Remember a vets oath is first DO NO HARM.... That means don't experiment on your pet if you don't know what you are doing. wait till you get the vet to see him.
