I have lived with stick straight hair for my whole life and I've constantly considered a wavy perm. The problem is that I'm terrified of doing anything chemical to my hair for fear of frying it. (I only colored it for the first time less than a year ago) Would a perm do this to my hair? Would it be too hard to keep up if I was in a hurry in the morning? Would a flat iron do a good job at taking out the curls? How much shorter (on average) would it make my hair?

I guess there are a few questions that you should ask yourself. Do you want to have to deal with the upkeep? - If you do a pretty loose wave or a body wave, you can generally go longer in between perms, and they'll definitey help you feel less "stick-straight".
If you've only colored your hair the one time, your hair is most likely in great condition. Permed hair can stay in good condition as long as you use good products for chemically treated hair afterwards. There are different levels of perms as well, depending on what they need to use for your hair type that will cause the least amount of damage (perms for fine hair, color-treated hair, etc.). Perms can be damaging, but generally that only happens if your hair is in bad condition to begin with, or your stylist lets it process for too long.
Curly hair, in my opinion is the easiest to style. I have naturally curly hair and I let my hair airdry with curl cream (I wash it every other day). You can also diffuse it with your blowdrier to get it dry before leaving the house if need be. Straightening with an iron would be fine, although, the curl has a bit of a memory and the more you straighten it, the harder it will be to get it to look good curly.
The length you'll lose will depend on the tightness of the curl you decide on. Meet with a stylist - tell her exactly what you're looking to achieve and they can tell you your options and give you an idea of what the finished product will be. Good Luck!

Hey! I learned something in class a few days ago, and I want to share it with you. This may help sway your decision on whether to get a perm or not.

All hair has sulfur in it. Whenever you accidentally burn hair, you get a foul smell. That's the sulfur changing in a chemical reaction due to heat. Hair contains a bunch of sulfur with one hydrogen atom attached to it. Whenever you get a perm, the hairstylist uses chemicals that "oxidizes" the sulfur in your hair. This means that the stylist chemically changes your hair by removing that hydrogen from the sulfur and fusing two sulfurs together. This is how your hair "holds shape" of either straight, curly, or wavy after it is chemically treated by the hair stylist. Let me attempt to draw you a picture.

Before perm:
--------------------------- (hair strand)
S S S S S S S S S (Sulfur)
H H H H H H H H H (Hydrogen attached to sulfur)

After perm:
---------------------------( hair strand)
S S S S S S S S S (sulfur)
S S S S S S S S S (sulfur)
-------------------------- (hair strand)

See, two hair strands are attached to each other chemically, and you lost two hydrogens in your hair. Since your hair is "oxidized," it can be re-oxidized by other elements in the air, and what this does is adds a Hydrogen back to your hair strand and returns it back to what it kina looks like before you walked into the hair salon. It can be oxidized by oxyen and ultraviolet light. Oxygen can be found everywhere, and ultraviolet light is from the sun. So, you see, there is not point to try to get a perm because nature is going to turn it right back to what it looked like after a short time. You're just wasting money.

I really hope that this helps.

certainly, given which you finished yet another chemical therapy on your hair, even nonetheless you spotted it became into dry, you have noticeably lots negated any accountability the salon had to the perm. At this factor, a stylist can inform you it became into the colour that ruined the perm.

well ive had straight hair as well. one year i got the wave perm and it was nice and all. but once you get it done you need to keep doing it every year otherwise your hair will look like crap. after the perm faded, my hair became incredibly puffy. i could never leave the house without straightening it first and i regretted having that perm for so long. having stick straight hair is actually considered being lucky so i think you should stick with your hair! it might be forever puffy afterwards.
