i went to the dentist and was told i needed a root canal. when the dentist drilled the older filling out, he found copious amounts of blood and pus. he said i had an abcess. he proceeded to give me the root canal, put a temp filling in, and gave me a script for antibiotics and percocets. next day i was in severe pain. he closes at 12:00 p.m. on fridays and doesn't have a way to get in touch for emergencies. i became bedridden saturday and part of today. i still feel ill. the pain has pretty much left the teeth, but the "halo" headache continues. percocet does nothing for the headache. i haven't missed a dose of amoxicillin. what should i do? i've never had so much pain from a simple dental procedure. the original pain came after a filling was put on the side of the tooth at the gumline. he gave me 2 desensitizers a week apart. that's why the root canal. am i gonna be ok?

Hi Robert

If the tooth was draining blood and pus then the dentist should not of put in a tempary filling. The tooth should be left open to drain for at least 48 hours. If you are having any kind of throbbing then the tooth needs to be opened. You proably have pressure build up and will have instant relief once the tempory filling is removed.

I think that a toothache is the worst pain you could ever have. I know what you're going through and it isn't nice at all. Did he finish the root canal?? When i have had root canals the dentist usually doesn't finish them all at once but does half one day and then a week or two later he'll do the rest of it. If you haven't had the whole procedure done then the pain will go away after it's all finished. How long ago did you start the amoxicilen? After about 3 or 4 days of being on that stuff the pain will go away. When you have a toothache that bad nothing will help. Just give it time and make sure you finish your antibiotics. Make an appointment as soon as you can with your dentist don't worry you'll be fine. Try taking more perkacets. If the bottle says to take one then take 3 lol

ROBERT,
THE PROBLEM WITH A ROOT CANAL IS THAT IT CAUSES A LOCALIZED INFLAMMATION--AND THIS IS WHY THE PERCOCET DOESN'T WORK. IT'S NOT AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY. A MORE EFFECTIVE MED IS IBUPROFEN 800mg EVERY 4-6 HOURS, SAME AS TAKING 4 200mg TABLETS.
PERCOCET INFO IS:
Why is this drug prescribed?
Percocet, a narcotic analgesic, is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. It contains two drugs--acetaminophen and oxycodone. Acetaminophen is used to reduce both pain and fever. Oxycodone, a narcotic analgesic, is used for its calming effect and for pain.

NEITHER OF THESE IS FOR INFLAMMATION. YOU WILL BE O.K.
