i have a 42 inch edtv monitor, what kind of dvd player can i use to get a good quality picture? would a upconvert dvd player/recorder help in this situation?

Your EDTV has 480 lines, exactly as a movie frame in a DVD. Un upconvert player is completely useless (it is useless in 80% of the time anyhow) since it will scale up at 720p and then your TV will scale it down to 480!! All this scaling is not that good!

So, use component cables from any DVD players and your picture should look great.
