Hi. I am 23 years old, 183cm tall and I weigh 18stone which I have recently come to appreciate as being grossly overweight, something which I denied for a long time. My question is this, what is the best way (and most healthy way) to lose weight rapidly? I know you can't drop 5 stone overnight or anything, but seriously, there must be like a crash course or something that isn't too dangerous or stupid like starving yourself. For the record, I don't overeat or comfort eat, most of my weight comes from the fact that I live a very comfortable life with very little work to do. Help.

Many Thanks for the incredibly helpful answers and none of the crap I was expecting. Just to add a bit of detail, this started when I moved away from England and I now live in France. There are no gyms around here, the nearest being in Lille or Arras which are both over 2 hours drive from here. I have some gym equipment at home which I do use haphazardly but I really don't know what to do. I have been told that if you do too much exercise whilst fat, the fat turns to muscle and you end up stuck in the larger body type which I don't want. Ideally, I am aiming for the "swimmer" profile though I realise that's an awful lot of work.

Viscount,

1. Use just about any diet you like for weight loss, but not for weight loss maintenance. For that you need a lifestyle change and the right diet.
2. Start an exercise program--slowly.
3. Don' t be in a hurry.

Recent research has shown that if all you want is to lose weight, any diet will work because they all are variations on two basic diets: low carb/high fat & protein, or low fat & protein/high carb.

Since they all reduce the calories we eat, they all effect weight loss approximately the same.

However, they are not all alike

1. In health results. For that, the low-fat diets (like the Ornish Diet) are best.

2. In weight loss maintenance. For that you need to lose weight for the right reason (not to lose weight), and to keep eating as you did on the diet.

Therefore, you have to change your diet in order to be healthy, not to lose weight. If you diet to lose weight, you'll just gain it back after you relax your diet as you reach your target weight. It's happened many times before.

If you are overweight, you can bet on it that you have heart disease, even at 23. Back in the 1960s American army doctors in Viet Nam found healthy soldiers at 19 and 20 already had fatty streaks in their arteries. More recently, in the PDAY study and after, younger and younger children have been found to have artery disease, down to eight and occasionally five years old.

So you have heart disease. The remedy for it is to cut down on as much fat in your diet as you can, and on a lot of the calories, too. Figure out how many pounds you'd like to weigh (we use those over here), and ten times that is the number of calories you should eat each day.

If you'd like to weigh, say, 13 stone, then you would eat 1800 calories a day. You'll lose weight and not be so hungry that you'll lose control and binge.

Eat mostly vegetables, fruit, and just a little lean meat, about the size of a deck of cards once a day.

If you'd like to speed up your weight loss, then start walking. Start with a mile and do that each day Monday-Friday for a week. Then go to a mile and a half the next week. Then two miles. Then two and a half. Walk as slowly as you need to. You can always speed up later. The goal at this point is exercise, not racing. Eventually, when you work up to four or five miles, you can start jogging, and drop back to a mile to start with. Increase your running distance no more than 20% over your previous week's distance, and never increase your speed and distance at the same time. You will injure yourself.

Get good shoes, which here start at $85 US. Asics, Reebok, Adidas, Nike. Go to the Runner's World website here:

http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/

and click on the "gear" tab at the top. It'll lead you through choosing the right shoe for you. You will want to get the right shoe to prevent injuries.

Walking and then running is the single best weight-loss exercise we have. Do that with your new diet and you will lose weight and become far fitter than you were, with more energy, and most likely become a much happier person, too. Running releases endorphins that make us feel good. This will happen eventually, not at first. It will take a while to get to this point, but if you keep it up, you will get there.

So eating right and exercising will help you achieve your goals and give you a pleasure boost as well.

Oh, yes, don't fall for fads like "cleansing." There's nothing to it. Don't go for exotic foods like noni or gogi or mangosteen or any of those other frauds. It's calories in/calories out, and a good balanced diet. That's all you need.

I'm vegetarian because it dropped my cholesterol levels so very far that my doctor gave up measuring them. But I know that a little meat every day doesn't hurt, and most of us can use the protein. But I say this to let you know that teh vegetable-0heavy diet (Ornish) that I recommend really works. I've lost weight and kept it off for years. You can, too.

Just remember, you're in this for the long haul, so take your time, stop when it hurts, and enjoy yourself. You'll like the new you.

I'd say start by walking, walk everywhere that you can, get a pedometer, they are great for encouraging you to push yourself a little harder. Get some sensible diet advice from either a nutritionist or diet group such as Weight Watchers, this might not be the fastest way to lose the weight but it will really keep you focused and less likely to stop and start.

Perhaps take up a free induction at a gym see if you like it. You say you want to lose weight rapidly, which is fine but it might be better to look at the bigger picture and make real life style choices and changes.

All in all aim to get a really positive experience from exercise and healthy diet that will spur you on to become the best you can be.
Good luck you can do it!

I suggest that you try body cleansing. I tried it and really got lean quickly. I lost 15 pounds in 9 days and also 3 inches off my waist. I do body sculpting so getting leaner was my goal. My sister did this program too and she lost a lot of weight quickly. I did not know too much about cleansing but there are a lot of TV commercials about this stuff. This is a body cleanse and not just a colon cleanse, I wanted my body to get lean quickly and this did the trick! I use the South Beach diet every year after Christmas to get ready for the cycling season. I can drop 15 to 20 lbs in 3 weeks and keep it off. Works well. Drink lots of water too!

first, start by cleaning out your system by drinking tea. by like green tea. i swear that stuff makes you crap out EVERYTHING. it cleans out your system really well. you can lose a pound already just by doing that. you'll have a stomach ache because of all the system cleansing but you'll be fine afterwards.
then drink lots of water dont forget that. try this. it might sound dorky, but it works. wear a black garbage bag over yourself and jog/run in the sun. black will attract the sun and it will make you sweat a lot. especially with the garbage bag material. ive done it and i've lost a lot in the course of a couple of days. a lot of it is water weight but if you just keep up the good work, you'll be good in no time.
