DIY channel had this on one of their shows. Use a piece of heavy duty canvas or a material that is sturdy, but will bend. Lay the canvas flat on a work surface; cut strips of wood(on a table saw)1/8to1/4 of inch wide. Glue the strips right next to each other. Let them dry thoroughly and then you should be able to roll it up.

Go to a thrift furniture store or check local yard sales for old roll top desk......just exchange the roll top out. The hardware that ive seen on all roll tops are usually the same.
