why do so many people believe in a so called god when they don't even believe in theirselves?

I would say, not only rid the planet of religion but of governments and borders. And then concentrate on a universal language and monetary unit. And if we have time, educate the world to the task of escaping the planet before the sun supernovas and ruins everything.
All are tall orders, so lets get moving.

If you got rid of religion, then a lot of people would have nothing to look forward to or give them hope in their lives. Religion is not the/a problem; people are the problem.
