I think the temperament of the dog and type of breed that fits your lifestyle is what you need to look for in choosing the best dog for you.

Here are some sites that I found on dog breeds, mixed and purebred and what best fits your lifestyle. Good luck in finding the best dog.

The real question is what is the best kind of dog for you?

Pure-bred dogs have been bred for years, even centuries, to have specific traits - both physical and personality. You can read books, go to dog shows and ask owners, etc., what kind of pure-bred dog fits your life style. Are you active? Do you live in an apartment? Do you live on a farm with plenty of space? Do you have a lot of company (some dogs are suspicious of strangers and not necessarily friendly at first)? Do you want a dog for protection - to bark when someone comes to the door, to accompany you on walks?

Determine your lifestyle priorities and then look for breeds that match them.

Don't count out non-specific breeds either. Rescue dogs can make great pets as well. Just remember to match their style and apparent personality and energy level to yours.

The worst thing you can do is get a dog that you ignore. Spending time with your dog will help it become the dog that you want!

It depends upon your lifestyle. Border collies, considered one of the most intelligent breeds, don't do well at all in the city. Dogs that don't shed, need to be sent to a groomer every 6 weeks or so. If you have children, you want a dog that is great with kids ... a shetland sheepdog (miniature collie) or golden retriever are great with kids. Check the AKC or CKC to find out the right dog for your lifestyle. And ... it may just be the one at the humane society, of mixed heritge that would be the best one for you.

This is a loaded question as it depends entirely on what your lifestyle will allow, and what you are looking for. I personally love Labrador Retreivers and Golden Retreivers. These are very intelligent animals. They are well behaved and great with kids. However, they tend to get BIG. If you are in an apartment, don't have a lot of space, and/or don't have the time or resources to give this type of dog sufficient exercise and play time, then he may get restless and act out. They are also notorious chewers but in my case it didn't take very much to break her of that. As I said they are very intelligent and trainable. I hope that helps.

My favorite kind of dog is any dog that can pass a temperament test like the one from this site.....

www.pbrc.net

You go there and click on the Temperament test part.

I like dogs from every breed. I really believe it's more the individual dog then a breed in particular. Temperament is very important.

my personal opinion is a MIX...most breeds are so overbred that they got to many inherritat problems... like the german Shepard and his hips...
Usually Mix breeds are healthier, and live longer, so that is what i go with.
I just got a Rotty/Lab ***** a few weeks ago. This gives me the best trades out of two breeds...
plus there must be a reason why breeders purposely breed mixed breeds and sell them for big $$$ like YorkyPoos and other Poo's... they sell for more than a pure bred Lab or Husky....
If the Breeders think it's good to mix, who am I to stand in their way???

All dogs are great! I personally love Chihuahuas. I own five of them, and as far as I'm concerned, they are the best dogs.

There are many. I think that Labs are the best. They are very protective, well mannered, kind, very easy to train and very forgiving.
